JOB DESCRIPTION – Maintenance Worker
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the central office (after employment offer is made).
- Valid Kansas Driver’s License.
- Ability to understand chemical hazards.
- Must be work-oriented and have self-initiative.
- Five years experience as a school custodian or the equivalent in custodial service in other institutions or firms.
- Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the basic techniques of electrical repair and maintenance, HVAC, carpentry and ground maintenance.
- Ability to manually lift a maximum of 60 pounds.
- Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director and Superintendent
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ability to provide a clean, safe, attractive, and comfortable environment to ensure full and productive use of District facilities.
- Ability to coordinate and supervise the activities of the custodial staff.
- Ability to promote a caring, helping attitude toward staff, students and patrons and convey that attitude in all that he/she does.
- Ability to supervise, motivate and direct employees to develop to fullest potential.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with staff, administrations, members of the school district and community.
- Ability to react to changes and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, and handle other tasks as assigned.
- Ability to operate all equipment and machinery as required.
- Ability to work to implement the vision and mission of the District.
- Ability to regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season, ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity, and maintain mechanical equipment as needed.
- Ability to organize and assist in promoting the safety, health and comfort of students and employees in school buildings and grounds.
- Ability to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness and efficiency in all maintenance and repair projects.

- Ability to move equipment and material within and between school buildings safely.
- Ability to address emergencies when they arise in order to prevent disruption of the schools.
- Ability to act as a substitute custodian when necessary.
- Ability to assist in ordering, receiving, delivering, and storing all school supplies.
- Ability to keep accurate and current inventory of tools, equipment and supplies and provide updated inventory lists to the District Office in January and July each year.
- Ability to exercise appropriate judgment and initiative to handle emergency situations as they arise.
- Keep current on new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
- Ability to observe and follow all District policies at all times.
- Ability to respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
- Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance on equipment and facilities.
- Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Ability to annually train and in-service custodial/summer employees regarding safety precautions, procedures, and equipment. Ability to maintain annual safety training records.
- Ability to perform other duties and assume other responsibilities assigned by Superintendent.
- Ability to perform custodial duties as assigned.
- Ability to maintain safe and attractive grounds and facilities.
- Ability to handle a fast-paced, intense work environment.
- Ability/willingness to work a daily schedule that could demand an extended workday.
- Coordinate and supervise the activities of the custodial staff.
- Successfully pass CPR Training (every two years) and Defensive Drive Training (every three years; if transporting Students).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials up to 60 lbs.
- Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, reaching, climbing and balancing.
- Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
- Must work in noisy and crowded environments, with numerous interruptions.
- Must work indoors and outdoors year-round in a variety of temperatures.
Term of Employment: 12 Month At Will/Contract
Evaluation: Performance effectiveness evaluated in accordance with Board of Education Policy.
