Overview
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities or special needs. This position involves providing assistance with daily living activities, promoting independence, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment. The DSP will work closely with clients in various settings, including group homes and home care environments, to facilitate their personal development and well-being.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct support to individuals in daily activities such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, and medication management.
- Assist clients with mobility and physical tasks to promote independence.
- Monitor clients’ health and safety, reporting any changes or concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Engage clients in social activities and community outings to enhance their social skills and integration.
- Document client progress and maintain accurate records of care provided.
- Implement individualized support plans tailored to each client's needs.
- Provide companionship and emotional support to clients, fostering a positive environment.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including nurses and social workers, to ensure comprehensive care.
- Participate in training sessions for CPR and other relevant skills as required.
Requirements
- Previous experience in direct support roles or related fields such as home care, hospice care, or memory care is preferred.
- Knowledge of patient monitoring techniques and ability to recognize medical emergencies.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, and team members.
- Compassionate nature with a commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities or special needs.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Certification in CPR is a plus but can be obtained after hiring if necessary.
- High school diploma or equivalent; further education in social work or related fields is advantageous but not mandatory.
