DEFINITION
The Peer Recovery Support Specialist and Monitor is a dual-role position designed to provide peer support to individuals navigating addiction recovery, while maintaining a secure and compliant environment for residents and staff. The role emphasizes using personal recovery experiences to inspire and guide clients, alongside tasks that ensure safety, adherence to policies, and fostering a strong sense of community. Collaborating with therapists, medical providers, and psychiatric staff, the Peer Recovery specialist delivers recovery-focused support from program entry to post-discharge follow-up.
Essential Functions:
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide individualized coaching and support to clients in recovery, assisting them in creating and achieving personalized recovery plans.
- Maintain a comprehensive list of recovery resources, including MAT services, support groups, sober living options, and treatment programs, and connect clients to appropriate resources.
- Complete timely and accurate documentation, including client interactions, assessments, enrollment forms, and program data.
- Facilitate peer-led recovery support groups to foster community among clients.
- Collaborate within an interdisciplinary team, including therapists, medical staff, and psychiatric providers, to deliver cohesive care.
- Uphold ethical standards, maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality in line with HIPAA regulations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities
1. Recovery Support
- Engage residents with empathy, leveraging personal recovery experiences to quickly build trust and rapport.
- Provide recovery-oriented, strengths-based support to help residents achieve personally meaningful goals.
- Coach residents on independent living skills and connect them with critical resources, such as housing, employment, and treatment services.
- Share knowledge on whole health recovery, promoting the wellness of both mind and body.
- Facilitate individual and group sessions aimed at skill-building, coping strategies, and personal growth.
- Foster hope by addressing internalized stigma and offering pathways from hopelessness to empowerment.
2. Case Monitoring
- Document interactions, treatment plans, and resident progress in alignment with agency and confidentiality guidelines (e.g., HIPAA).
- Track client participation, goals, and treatment responses to ensure active engagement in recovery efforts.
- Collaborate with treatment teams for continuous support and comprehensive care planning.
3. Safety and Property Monitoring
- Enforce property-specific policies and conduct regular inspections to ensure residents' safety and security.
- Respond to emergencies appropriately, document incidents, and report any safety violations.
- Coordinate random drug testing and compliance check-ins while maintaining a non-judgmental environment.
4. Community Engagement and Group Facilitation
- Lead educational classes, workshops, and support groups centered on recovery, life skills, and behavioral health awareness.
- Promote resident involvement in community activities such as volunteering, recreation, and employment.
- Encourage residents to build interpersonal skills and foster connections within their natural support network.
- Represent the organization at community events, fostering awareness and partnerships.
5. Administrative Duties
- Maintain thorough and accurate records of service provided, client engagement, and property monitoring activities.
- Prepare documentation, including progress notes and incident reports, in compliance with funding and organizational requirements.
- Actively participate in team meetings, training sessions, and compliance activities related to professional development.
6. Professional Development and Self-Care
- Attend regular supervision, training, and community events to enhance cultural competency and skills.
- Stay up to date on peer support trends, ethical practices, and trauma-informed care.
- Prioritize self-care practices to prevent burnout and maintain high professional standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
- Must have a Certification as a Peer Support Specialist.
- Must have high school diploma or GED.
- Lived experience in behavioral health recovery or as a caregiver supporting mental health or addiction challenges.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Basic computer proficiency in documentation and communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years of experience in peer support, behavioral health, or case management.
- Knowledge of safety protocols in residential or community environments.
- The position MAY require schedule flexibility, including evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations to meet client and program needs.
