Driver Job Description

The Driver Associate will be responsible for efficiently handling deliveries and interacting with customers and family members. This position works closely with customers and branch family members, always providing Southern Way Service.

Essential Functions

• Provide customers with Southern Way Service at all times
• Pick, pack, and prepare customer orders accurately and promptly
• Safely load and unload delivery trucks
• Deliver customer orders to customer shops, job sites, etc. And unload orders according to customer specifications
• Verify delivered items with shipping papers and obtain the customer's signature
• If c.o.d. collect the indicated amount of payment from the customer
• Safely and courteously operate delivery vehicle accordingly in compliance with local, state, and federal laws
• Inspect and maintain delivery vehicle in accordance with company policy and report any problems or concerns to the Branch Manager and/or Warehouse Manager
• Receive and account for incoming inventory
• Sort and place inventory on or in racks, shelves, or bins according to predetermined sequence such as size, type, style, color, or product code
• Assist in maintaining inventory control and preventing stock shortages or overages
• Use the computer system to enter records
• Safely operate a lift truck according to OSHA regulations
• Maintain warehouse appearance by sweeping and removing trash daily
• Maintain yard appearance by removing pallet boards, straps, and trash daily
• Any additional functions assigned by the local Branch Manager and/or Supervisor
• Under general direction, assist in any special projects

• Back up Counter/Inside Sales
• Back up Warehouse

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED;
• Valid drivers license and passing motor vehicle report; CDL license preferred;
• Be at least 21 years of age;
• Must be able to pass DOT/Non-DOT pre-employment Drug Test;
• Capable of being certified to operate lift truck/forklift;
• Minimum of 1-3 months of related experience preferred;
• Strong knowledge of industry products and their applications preferred;
• Excellent knowledge of delivery routes and local traffic laws;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
• Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment;
• Ability to read and interpret detailed written information (computer reports, material, customer specifications, etc.) and locate and identify part numbers;
• Comprehend hazardous material warning labels and instructions;
• Outstanding time management and organizational skills;
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Demands

• Frequent driving and exposure to varying weather conditions;
• Strong physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds;
• Interaction with customers and Southern Pipe family members in a fast-paced environment;
• Ability to stand, walk, and move around the warehouse for extended periods;
• Comfortable working in various environmental conditions, including exposure to outdoor weather and occasional exposure to moving machinery.
