Overview
The Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center (AHEC) director of health careers exploration provides health careers exploration programming to middle and high school students in Addison, Bennington, Rutland, Windham, and Windsor counties. Position collaborates with and supports educational institutions, organizations, agencies, and healthcare-related businesses which support health professions education and training. The Southern Vermont AHEC office is in Springfield, VT. Remote work is available.
Responsibilities
Plan and direct our flagship health careers exploration and job shadow programs throughout the year, including intensive, in-person summer programs like MedQuest, Advanced MedQuest, and/or a Health & Medicine Institute.
- Manage and plan programmatic logistics
- Recruit and select students for each program as needed
- Select and oversee program staff and volunteers
- Coordinate job shadows and other clinical experiences with hospitals and healthcare community as needed
- Coordinate with community professionals to implement programming
Develop and coordinate school-based health careers programing.
- Prepare and facilitate health careers exploration curriculum in schools, career and technical centers (CTE), and extracurricular programs
- Support and facilitate health career-related workshops and exhibits at such events in the region like career fairs and Sophomore Summits
- Develop and sustain strong partnerships with teachers, school counselors and other educational staff
Work collaboratively within the Vermont AHEC network and with AHEC partners.
Conduct program evaluation and implement program improvement measures. Ensure program and participant data is collected to measure AHEC and programmatic outcomes and meet funder reporting requirements.
Collaborate with regional partners that support students and health careers training programs, such as area hospitals and long-term care facilities, area CTE advisory boards and program instructors
Engage with the healthcare community.
- Attend relevant community meetings.
- Perform outreach with healthcare providers, mentors, program alumni, etc.
- Stay abreast of trends and new developments in healthcare education and career training
Oversee the development and dissemination of print and digital materials to promote health careers programs; maintain a consistent and accurate media presence through the organization's website, Facebook and other media.
Qualifications and Skills
Minimum education required: Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience (Master’s degree preferred)
The ideal candidate will possess:

- Enthusiasm for working with youth and young professionals
- Excellent organizational and management skills to coordinate and deliver programming
- Excellent communication skills, interacts well with others in one-on-one, classroom, and group settings
- Excellent assessment and program evaluation skills for planning and directing continuous improvement
- Facility working with technology, such as Microsoft Office suite, video conferencing, webinars and online presentation, and social media platforms.
- Valid driver’s license, use of a personal vehicle, and insurance coverage (travel required)
Professional experience in healthcare or education is strongly preferred.
To be considered, applicants must currently reside in (or be willing to relocate to) Addison, Bennington, Rutland, Windham, or Windsor County in Vermont.
