We are currently recruiting for the above role, internally known as Bioresources System Capacity Planner within the Wastewater Treatment & Maintenance function to control the production, quality and transportation of waste material within a defined operational region. In this highly empowering role, you will

create value by working to eliminate variability in the operation of Southern Water’s integrated Bioresources system.

Your key responsibilities include maintaining and executing all tankering / logistics plans within a defined operational region and aim to develop and work within the framework of a “closed loop” planning system, whereby production sites supply inputs to meet the demands of fixed reception facilities. In a closed loop system, the reception facility will only change in exceptional circumstances with your full oversight, control, and autonomy.

You will proactively monitor process parameters at sludge production and reception sites and take appropriate decisions on scheduling and routing based on asset availability and constraints. Using your detailed understanding of site processes and capacity restrictions, and strong working relationships with site managers and operators, you may maintain a programme of upcoming planned maintenance activities and incorporates this into your forward-looking plans. .

Your daily tasks would also include :

  • Production of daily activity schedules for operational region and publishing schedules for execution by the waste recycling service provider / tankering contractor.
  • Reporting on plan compliance and escalates poor performance to the Bioresources Manager or service provider.
  • Monitoring inventory levels at production and reception sites on a daily basis and is responsible for maintaining adequate storage capacity within their region to promote operational resilience and maintain wastewater treatment standards.
  • Observing liquid sludge concentration using instrumentation systems where available and otherwise by inference through data analysis.
  • Tracking performance over time and intervene to course-correct and maintain optimal performance. You will be able to identify consistent poor performance and contribute towards delivering process improvements.
  • Partnering with site owners and operators and promoting shared ownership of operational plans and schedules.

In this highly autonomous role, you will trigger extra resources in order to maintain appropriate storage capacity and you will make operational judgements with reference to your understanding of the current supply / demand balance within the Bioresources system. With your special consideration for dewatering sites, you will establish creative ways of assessing risk associated with stock holdings with your full understanding of the relationship between sludge concentration, sludge volume and sludge haulage costs.

To be successful in this role, you will have good organisation and process management skills within a highly operational environment. Previous experience within logistics or transport management will be beneficial. With your passion to ensure we comply to our regulator’s requirements, your methodical approach with good problem solving and planning skills will be key success criteria required for the role.

As a member of the Wastewater Treatment & Maintenance function you may be required to respond to emerging customer, compliance, or operational events as part of Southern Water’s Incident Response framework.
