CUSTODIAN/BUILDING MONITOR
Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, Operations & Facilities Manager, Recreation Specialist or the Lead Custodian/Security, responsible for the set-up, care, cleaning, and safe operation of the center during scheduled hours. Performs maintenance and monitoring functions at the center and do related work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Opens and closes the facility for evening activities and weekend rentals.
Remains at the facility and monitors activities and the needs of the groups using the center.
Carries out assigned tasks including but not limited to sweep, mop, scrub, strip, wax and polish floors; shampoo and steam rugs and carpets; clean and stock the restrooms; empty waste receptacles; dust and polish furniture; wash windows and perform minor repairs.
Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in maintaining and cleaning buildings and facilities.
Maintains and monitors inventory of restroom, janitorial and other equipment and supplies. Recommends the ordering of supplies and equipment when needed.
Acts as a representative of the facility during non-business hours.
Greets public, answers telephones, and provides information to public or directs them to proper office.
Conducts regular surveillance of the interior and the exterior of the center to provide for the safety and monitoring of the facility and its users.
Cleans and maintains restrooms, food preparation areas, aquatic facilities and other facilities.
Assists in the setup, production and clean-up of special events as assigned.
Assists in the maintenance of the parking lot and landscape areas adjacent to the center.
Performs heavy physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects, such as tables, chairs and floor machine, (up to 50 lbs.) Walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods; climb ladders.
Complies with Southgate Recreation & Park District Occupational Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Reports safety and sanitary hazards to the Recreation Supervisor, Operations & Facilities Manager, Recreation Specialist or the Lead Custodian/Security.
Follows oral and written instructions.
Prepares and maintains written records and reports.
Works harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of and Skilled in: Effective oral and written communication skills. Methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance of buildings and grounds and in the functioning of those facilities; familiar with the care and use of institutional cleaning equipment and materials. Common safety practices and procedures.
Ability to: Follow oral and written instructions; read, write and speak English at a level to satisfactorily perform the work; work harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public; maintain neat and appropriate appearance; effectively communicate orally and in writing; analyze situations and adopt effective course of action; make sound judgments during emergency situations. Follow safety procedures and identify potential safety hazards.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform heavy physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects, such as tables, chairs and floor machine, (up to 50 lbs.) Must be able to walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods; climb ladders.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must be at least 18 years old. Completion of high school or equivalent is desirable. One-year experience performing general building, grounds maintenance that can be directly related to the requirements listed above for knowledge and abilities is desired.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate– highly desired.
HOURS
Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays with varying times. Must be willing to work on-call.
COMPENSATION $16.50 - $17.00 per hour
STATUS Part-time; Non-Exempt.
