Hours: 2:15pm - 6:00pm or 3:00pm - 6:00pm
Requirements:
- Qualified Candidate must be at least 16 years of age
- Possess or be able to obtain certifications in Connecticut Child Care, Professional Rescuer CPR, Administration of Medication and Epi-pen
- Possess good oral and written communication skills
- Have experience working with children
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Site Coordinator or Senior Director of Youth Development, the School Age Counselor is responsible for the following:
- Communicate with parents.
- Be available for questions and concerns
- Notify parents of any problems or concerns
- Ensure a proper staff to child ratio and find subs when out sick or for a planned absence. In the event of a shift change, stay in the program area until your replacement arrives
- Work with other site staff to plan and implement a varied, age appropriate monthly lesson plans in accordance with designated themes. Activities should include center play, homework time, and gross motor play
- Assist in and be supportive of the accreditation processes, and in achieving long-range goals
- Meet regularly with site staff and Coordinator, and participate in Department trainings or meetings
- Follow all Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA policies and procedures
- Follow all State of Connecticut licensing regulations
- In accredited programs, follow all NAEYC or NSACA criteria
- Prepare snack according to the daily snack menu
- Provide snack “family” style and make sure water is accessible and available for children
- Provide and encourage a supportive environment by avoiding consumption of food or beverages during program time that are inconsistent with the HEPA standards
- Model healthy eating behaviors during meal and snack time by participating in eating healthy meals with children
- Attend professional development to support implementation of the HEPA standards
- Ensure that a person specifically designated by the custodial parent(s), as indicated in the child’s file, picks up each child. Ask for photo ID from parents, guardians, etc. when picking the child up for the first time or whenever unfamiliar with the person picking them up
- Approach anyone in the program area that is not involved in the program and ask them their business there
- Report any suspected cases of abuse/neglect to a supervisor immediately
- Communicate any conflict situations with parents to a supervisor
- Follow the YMCA’s behavior management policy
- Complete any necessary paperwork as requested including payroll forms, newsletter requests, attendance forms, sign/out sheets etc.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization at the site
- Be a role model through participation in activities and positive discussions about active living
- Maintain a positive relationship with site host
- Be available to work Fun Days and Snow Days as required
- Foster a positive team orientated environment, encouraging staff growth and development
- Operate all programs with the safety of the participants in mind and abide by all applicable risk management policies
- Serve as a YMCA ‘ambassador’ in the Southington-Cheshire community
- Other duties as required
- I will adhere to all policies and procedures related to child abuse prevention
