What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corrosion Technologist - Wilcox/Safford position at Southwest Gas?
THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE REQUIRED TO LIVE IN EITHER THE WILCOX OR GRAHAM COUNTY AREAS.
Perform advanced cathodic protection measurement functions and procedures on galvanic anode and impressed current cathodic protection systems, advanced rectifier testing and maintenance, advanced short locating, interference testing, cathodic protection ground bed design and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two years work experience and training as a Corrosion Technician or equivalent. Successful completion of Corrosion Technologist training.
Have a knowledge of advanced electrical fundamentals and instrumentation for electrical measurements; thorough knowledge of mechanical, electrical, chemical, and physics principles including corrosion control theory and its application; mathematics through algebra; basic computer knowledge and application; troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques and procedures.
Note: Employees must pass all written tests and/or hands-on training, or simulations as required for this job classification; this includes all the covered task modules for Operator Qualification. Employees must qualify in all covered tasks in their classification and satisfy all applicable requirements under State and Federal law.
TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Perform all duties of a Corrosion Technician. Design, install, operate, repair, and maintain galvanic anode and impressed current cathodic protection systems
- Review cathodic protection system performance by analysis of test data and records
- Conduct required tests and surveys to determine cause of and solution to cathodic protection problems
- Assist in the training of Corrosion Technician employees under the supervision of the Corrosion Specialist or Corrosion Supervisor
- Operate electrical and electronic test equipment
- Ensure compliance with SWG policies and procedures
- Conduct pipeline patrols, as required
- Perform interference testing
- Locate shorts to other structures
- Perform pipe wrapping
- Utilize ruggedized laptop PC or desktop PC to download and graph data from Close Interval Surveys, to view electronic maps, and to document compliance inspections, maintenance activities and generate construction work orders in the appropriate computer application(s)
- Review engineering designs for cathodic protection requirements
- Review construction as-built records for cathodic protection requirements
- Must be able to work with electricity
- Perform field inspection of contract personnel
- Maintain a working knowledge of applicable company and cathodic protection computer programs
- Assist Corrosion Specialist as required
- Maintain company vehicles and equipment
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Regular and predictable attendance is a condition of employment and is an essential function of the job
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Meet and maintain the strenuous physical requirements of the position.
- Must be able to be ON-CALL Must be able to be contacted and respond for emergency duty when on-call.
- Must respond to base location or emergency site within one hour or as division operational needs dictate, subject to Division VP approval, when on-call.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and/or other special licenses/certifications.
- Must be available to perform shift work, staggered work week, including recognized holidays.
- Must be available to work overtime.
- Must be able to wear a complete company-issued uniform.
- Must be able to wear and use all personal protective safety equipment as operating conditions dictate.
- Must be able to work in another location, district, or department.
- Must be able to work outdoors, exposed to extremes in temperatures and conditions.
- May be exposed to natural gas during the course of work.
- Must successfully complete all aspects of required training.
- Must comply with company rules of general conduct, company policies and procedures
This position is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) under Title 49 CFR Part 382 and Part 40. Any applicant/employee who performs a DOT-covered function or is licensed and would operate a commercial vehicle for the Company will be subject to drug and alcohol testing under the Company's DOT drug and alcohol testing programs. $32.11 - $42.26
