The position of the Credit Underwriter (CU) is responsible for providing financial analysis of customers and prospects for loan requests and ongoing credit monitoring utilizing Banks proprietary systems including spreading programs and Excel spreadsheets. The Credit Underwriter will assist Lenders and Portfolio managers in identifying historical earnings trends and ratios, borrowing needs, sources of repayment and collateral sufficiency. The Credit Underwriters will work with Lenders and provide financial spreads as needed for existing portfolio management and new loan opportunities. They may also assist in the preparation of credit presentations in coordination with Lenders, Senior Portfolio Managers, Portfolio Managers, Senior Credit Administrator and Credit Administrator. The Credit Underwriter will engage in routine monitoring of the credit portfolio by testing loan covenants, performing borrowing base reconciliations, and ensuring financial documents are filed appropriately within the Bank’s systems and updated in accordance with the borrower’s Loan Agreements. This position shall also perform Annual Reviews as warranted in conjunction with Lenders/Portfolio managers, as well as underwriting of new loans and renewals as identified by Lenders, Senior Portfolio Managers, Portfolio Managers, Senior Credit Administrator and Credit Administrator.

The Credit Underwriter must have a strong understanding of GAAP accounting and business and personal tax returns including balance sheets, income statements and statement of cash flows. Works independently and shows attention to detail and responds promptly to Lender/Portfolio Manager/customer needs for service and assistance. This position requires accuracy, thoroughness, monitoring of own work to ensure quality, following prescribed policies and procedures. The Credit Underwriter shall use time efficiently with the ability to prioritize and complete work in a timely manner.

Assures compliance with all Bank policies and procedures, as well as all applicable state and federal banking regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES


  • Gathers data from customers and prospects, internal and external sources, prepares spreadsheets and analyzes financial information including financial statements and tax returns and works with Lenders and Portfolio Managers to request additional information and clarification of data.
  • Utilize Bank’s preferred software programs(s) to prepare financial analysis, identifying trends, ratios, and compliance with existing loan covenants and Loan Agreements.
  • Reconcile business GAAP and company-prepared financials to tax returns and prepare analysis of personal tax returns, personal financial statements and credit bureaus to determine guarantor cash flow.
  • Responsible for monitoring covenants of customers within assigned portfolio to identify deteriorating credit conditions and compliance with loan agreements. Assists Lenders and Portfolio Managers in documenting covenant violations and approval of covenant violation waivers (if requested).
  • Maintaining database by verifying accuracy of data entered.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Senior Credit Administrator and Chief Credit Officer.
  • Underwrite loan requests as warranted with narrative explanation of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources of repayment, business background, industry and loan grade, as assigned.
  • Prepared Global cash flow analysis and worksheets with analysis on rental rates, vacancy expenses, and capitalization rates to determine debt capacity and repayment ability.
  • Performs periodic review and audit of customer loan files.
  • Protects the Bank’s assets and maintains quality of portfolio by adhering to lending processes, policies & procedures, compliance, legal and ethical requirements and regulations, audit requirements and established risk management guidelines.
  • Develops knowledge of various industries, economy, market conditions, interest rates, participating banks and competition.
  • Keeps informed of changes, i.e. regulations and laws that pertain to job responsibilities.
  • Adheres to all Bank policies including, but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, Privacy Act, Anti-Money Laundering Regulations and Information Security policy.
  • May represent the Bank in various community, civic, and community reinvestment functions to further enhance the Bank’s image and develop additional business.

  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience
  • BS/BA in business; and 3-5 years of banking experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced experience, knowledge and training in all lending activities, terminology, products and services.

    Knowledge & Communication Skills
  • Advanced knowledge of related state and federal banking compliance regulations, and other Bank operational policies.
  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and instruct others, interpret documents, understand procedures, write reports and correspondence, speak clearly to customers and employees. Ability to develop and maintain relationships internally and externally.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and professionally (both written and oral) before groups of customers, team members, and management of the Bank.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a team to achieve company goals
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
Analytical & Decision-Making Skills
  • Ability to formulate and execute basic mathematical formulas to perform analytical analysis or financial analysis that supports decision making or other action.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with complex problems involving multiple facets and variables in non-standardized situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt to change. Understand that change will occur, expect it, effortlessly perform during and after the change using the perspectives, tools, and techniques provided within the organization.
  • Ability to document rationale, issues and conclusions of accounting decisions, actions taken, processes, pronouncements, etc. in memos or other written forms.
Computer/Software/Other Equipment Skills
  • Basic knowledge of Office365, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as PC, printer, fax/copier, and telephone.
  • Current driver’s license and a vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage if required to drive in the course of performing assigned duties and responsibilities.
