Position Title: Laboratory Technician
DESCRIPTON
The Human Milk Repository of New Mexico is the only mother’s milk bank in the state. Our mission is to collect, process, and distribute donor human milk and to increase the availability and access to human donor milk for preterm and medically fragile infants. The Lab Technician works directly under supervision of the Executive Director, the Preventative Control Qualified Individual (PCQI). This is a part-time, at-will employee position at the milk bank operations and has potential for growth.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED, plus any combination of post-secondary education and/or experience totaling one (1) year in general laboratory experience.
- Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently; multilingual is welcome.
Ability to interpret standard operating procedures and regulations, accurately perform mathematical computations, review and interpret patient chart data, and make sound decisions based upon the foregoing information.
- HIPAA certification required.
- ASCP, AMT, or CPhT certification preferred.
- FDA food-server certification preferred; will be required upon hire.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensuring all Policies & Procedures are following for safe handling of human donor milk and identification, categorization, pasteurization, bottling, and record-keeping.
- Strictly protect confidentiality of information concerning families or children in services, or fellow staff; this includes refraining from sharing of confidential information with individuals whose jobs do not require the information.
- Monitoring performance of laboratory pasteurization, test samples, labeling and record keeping for human donor breast milk from screened and approved milk donors.
- Verifying human donor milk with records and post-pasteurization test results and recording all procedures appropriately.
- Monitoring and participating in the pasteurization process, record-keeping, logging data, and assisting with any necessary milk recall.
- Communicating inventory status (raw and pasteurized) to the Executive Director.
- Responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Maintain good professional relationships with vendors, milk testing labs & others; promote a positive corporation image and successful public relations through all assigned work.
- Coordinate flexible schedule with Executive Director and other lab technicians.
- Attend staff meetings when necessary and maintain positive and open communication with all employees, board members, and volunteers.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
1. Hours of Work: Position will work as many hours per week as is necessary to complete assigned duties. Approximately 10-20 hours work per week is expected, on average. Hours of work may vary from week to week, depending on the development and administrative needs of the organization. After initial training period, increased flexibility of night and weekend work is possible.
2. Scrubs and closed toe shoes are required for this position; a lab coat and hair covering are provided.
3. There is potential for expansion of hours as well as duties and responsibilities as the
Human Milk Repository expands.
