What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator Adjunct Instructor position at Southwest Virginia Community College?
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
- Manages the program advisory board(s)
- Defines learning objectives, prepares and teaches classes, creates a student-oriented learning environment, and evaluates student learning in assigned courses
- Engages in curriculum and course development
- Serves as academic advisor
- Serves on college committees and participates in other college activities
- Must be available to teach day, evenings, weekends, and on and off-campus classes in person and online
- Assists in the recruitment, training and support of adjunct instructors within teaching field.
- May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor

- Five years of occupational experience in heavy equipment operator, operating modern heavy equipment used in the construction industry
- Combination of education and industry credentials to demonstrate content expertise
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Commitment to community college philosophy and student success
- Ability to plan, organize, prioritize ad work independently
- Must be able to successfully complete background check
- NCCER qualified instructor
- Experience teaching adult learners and/or in a community college
- Experience using Canvas or similar learning management system
- Experience teaching with simulators
- Associates degree
- Recent experience preparing adult students for success on credentialing exams
