Southwest Virginia Community College (Southwest) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a candidate to fill the role of Program Retention Specialist who will assist in the Student Support Services area of the College. This is a grant-funded position.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Applies knowledge of specialized program areas and/or interpretive/educational methodology to assist students in developing strategies to be in good academic standing, progress in their program of study leading to graduation / transfer as well as continued eligibility for financial assistance.
  • Applies knowledge of specialized program areas and/or interpretive/educational methodology to assist students in developing strategies to be in good academic standing, progress in their program of study leading to graduation / transfer as well as continued eligibility for financial assistance
  • Effectively assist students to provide them with services and activities as indicated on their Individual Service Plans.
  • Responsibilities include reviewing student credentials/ information and applying as well as ; conducting educational-based research analyses, identifying problem areas, and compiling statistical data to support program goals and objectives; coordinating complex activities in support of student enrollment services, financial aid, career planning/ placement and student life/activities; and/or developing, implementing, promoting and evaluating federal and statewide policies and assigned educational programs.
  • Contacts include the public; students; parents; schools; faculty; staff; financial institutions; national, state and local health organizations; civic and professional organizations; businesses; special interest groups; and subject professionals to provide educational information and technical assistance, to discuss career opportunities, to assess interests and aptitudes, and promote programs.
  • Promoting college graduation rates for low-income and potential first-generation college students
  • Promoting the annual persistence rates of students from one academic year to the next.
  • Improving the annual academic standing rates of students.
  • Academic advising and college, career, financial aid and economic literacy activities and related services for low-income and potential first- generation college students
  • Performing recruitment presentations
  • Interprets and applies policies and procedures.
  • May assist in training, supervise and evaluate work of staff.
  • May lead or oversee the work of students, interns and/or volunteers.
  • Assist students with academic advising and college, career, financial aid and economic literacy activities and related services for low-income and potential first- generation college students
  • Assist with educational events both on-campus and off-campus
  • Other duties as assigned

This position requires a one-year probationary period for both new hires and transfers.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree Required in Counseling, education, social work, or related fields from an accredited college or university with an endorsement in English, Math, Science, counseling or related field or those who have equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of two years of appropriate and relevant professional experience working with federal programs or similar related program/project for disadvantaged and at-risk college students.
  • Experience coordinating and supervising project programming and field experiences.
  • Experience advising and assisting students with four-year college admissions and financial aid process.
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting students.
  • Formal training and/or work experience in programming that promotes the annual persistence rates of students from one academic year to the next.
  • Formal training and/or work experience in programming that improves the annual academic standing rates of students.
  • Formal training and/or work experience promoting college graduation rates for low-income and potential first-generation college students.
  • Knowledge of academic advising and college, career, financial aid and economic literacy activities and related services for low-income and potential first- generation college students.
  • Knowledge of personal and career counseling.
  • Ability to perform recruitment presentations.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and evaluate student applications.
  • Ability to effectively maintain a caseload of students and provide them with services and activities as indicated on their Individual Service Plans.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including Office software.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, counseling, communication, organization and facilitation skills in case management.
  • Knowledge of barriers to postsecondary education faced by low income and potential first- generation college students.
  • Knowledge of project/program planning, financial and grant accountability principles, or statistical analysis and interpretation.
  • Must possess a current driver's license in order to assist with educational events

  • Experience at the community college level.
  • Experience using Navigate 360 EAB system.
