What are the responsibilities and job description for the PT Career Coach - Ridgeview High School position at Southwest Virginia Community College?
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is looking for a part-time career coach to serve Ridgeview High School in the Southwest service area.
Virginia Community College System high school career coaches are community college employees who are based in local high schools to help high school students define their career aspirations and to learn about community college and other postsecondary programs. These programs may include apprenticeships and workforce training as well as other opportunities that can help students achieve their educational and financial goals.
- Assisting students with career exploration, career plans, and career assessments,
- Assisting students with post-secondary academic and/or training plans,
- Assisting students with activities related to successful movement into a career pathway and post-secondary education,
- Assisting students with dual-enrollment application and advisement,
- Assisting students with financial aid/scholarship applications,
- Easing the transition of students from high schools to postsecondary education and the skilled workforce,
- Assisting student with experiential learning opportunities,
- Communicating with parents regarding postsecondary education and career planning
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Demonstrated familiarity with VA Wizard, EMSI and other career exploration programs
- One year of experience working with high school or college aged students
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong comfort level with technology in the workplace
- Experience with public speaking and/or giving presentations
- Experience using a case management system
- Valid Driver’s license
- Ability to travel as needed with occasional overnight stays for required meetings
- Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling or a related field
- Experience as a high school career coach in the VCCS
- Proven ability to build positive relationships with internal/external stakeholders
- VCCS Career Coach credential
