Southwest Virginia Community College (Southwest) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a candidate to fill the role of Simulation Lab Instructor for the Nursing Program. The position reports directly to the Dean of Health Technologies and indirectly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Southwest Virginia Community College (Southwest). This is a full-time, nine-month teaching position. Reappointment will be based on performance evaluations and institutional needs.
The primary responsibility of a member of the teaching faculty in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. At Southwest, the major emphasis shall be on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms and/or laboratories, through individual conferences, various distance education media, and related activities. Our goal is to help students develop their own interests and abilities to the fullest capacity in order to become better employees and better citizens.
In cooperation with nursing faculty, this individual will develop, prepare, teach and assess clinical simulation topics designed for the nursing programs.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Participate and work with faculty in the development, implementation, and integration of simulations in the curriculum as well as evaluation;
- Serve as faculty to students in teaching scenario/learning situations of nursing skills, simulations, and debriefing sessions
- Demonstrate simulation knowledge and skills in that methodology and shall engage in ongoing professional development in the use of simulation;
- Train faculty, support staff and students in simulation technology;
- Provide instructional support in the simulation lab and classroom for students and faculty to improve competencies and skills in meeting the course objectives;
- Develop and conduct evaluation of the effectiveness of simulation technology;
- Schedule and coordinate simulation and clinical activities for identified nursing courses;
- Maintain and update simulation lab to include, but not limited to: identifying software updates, supply and equipment needs, monitoring the simulation equipment, and troubleshooting and solving problems;
- Maintain the simulation lab and coordinate lab activities to include: inventory and maintaining of supplies, anticipate supplies needed for courses before course and get supplies, maintain operation of the manikins and equipment, keep lab neat and organized;
- Maintain records of all simulation activities, including number of students participating, number of partners participating, documentation forms, and video data;
- Communicate with partner liaisons to coordinate simulations for their employees;
- Mentor and supervise the Sim Lab Assistant working in the simulation lab;
- Perform the scheduling of staff for the simulation lab;
- Perform clinical rotations or classroom instruction and proctoring as needed;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Other duties shared by the teaching faculty include participation in reaccreditation efforts, student advising, student activities, sponsorship of student organizations, supervision of work-study students, college service activities, professional development activities, and community service.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Current unrestricted or multistate license to practice as a registered nurse in Virginia;
- Master’s degree in nursing required;
- Two years of recent, related clinical experience;
- Demonstrate simulation knowledge and skills in that methodology;
- Proficient with computer technology, including the use of a PC and relevant software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.;
- An acceptable background check for the successful candidate is also required.
- Theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise associated with clinical simulations and computer assisted learning;
- Experience in facilitating simulations;
- Ability to facilitate, write, and program scenarios or case studies into simulations;
- Evidence of ability to facilitate, write, and program simulations into the computer;
- Knowledge of Canvas, Zoom, Instructional Syllabi, Navigate and Outlook a plus.
