What are the responsibilities and job description for the DETENTION OFFICER position at Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority?
Supervises and maintains security and control of inmates within and during movement between specific areas. Supervises inmate work details both inside and outside the secure perimeters of the jail facility. Makes periodic security rounds of assigned quarters and work areas. Performs inmate counts at regular and variable intervals. Assists in prevention of contraband into the facility. Participates in searches of inmate housing units, work and recreational areas as needed. Maintains familiarity with up-to-date emergency procedures. Maintains sanitation standards daily at all posts. Position will work various posts within the facility. May be required to perform transportation, intake, booking and release, and any other appropriate and related duties, as assigned.
Detention Officers are required to attend Jailer Basic School at the Southwest Law Enforcement Academy within one year from the date of hire and receive certification from the Department of Criminal Justice Services in order to remain in a Detention Officer position.
High School Diploma or GED required. Previous experience in a correctional setting helpful but not required. Position requires the ability to walk, stand, sit, run, stoop, bend and lift. Ability to fire a weapon, restrain and subdue inmates as necessary.
