What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at Southwestern Medical Center?
The Phlebotomist performs various duties under the supervision of medical technologists/medical laboratory technicians. Job duties include: Phlebotomy: Perform phlebotomy procedures such as venipunctures, capillary sticks, heel sticks, blood culture collections, and bleeding times in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Specimen Accessioning: Accurately and completely accession specimens into the laboratory information system, accurately label specimens and distribute to appropriate section for testing. Referencing Specimens: Send specimen to outside laboratories, ensuring accurate completion of requisitions slips and safe packaging of the specimen. Reconciled reference lab billing statements. Inventory Control: Maintain collection area; inventory and stock supplies with assistance of techs as needed. Reception/Clerical Duties: receive and process patients for testing using good customer service skills; register patients and/or specimens following established Admitting policies and procedures; provide appropriate documentation for completion of patient’s medical record; accurately file reports and requisitions; answer telephone, handling inquiries appropriately using good customer service skills; assist in other duties as assigned. Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement: Participate in activities to support the hospital in meeting JCAHO and CAP accreditation standards while adhering to billing compliance regulations. Specimen Testing: Set up cultures.
HS Diploma or GED required Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or 5 years documented experience as a phlebotomist National certification as a phlebotomist is preferred Primarily Weekend shifts
