What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian - Temporary Sub/On-Call position at Southwestern Oregon Community College?
Under general supervision, the position performs a variety of services both individually and with the other Facility Services staff for the College facilities. The custodian provides superior customer service to provide a clean, safe, working and learning environment. The position is responsible for maintaining the overall cleanliness of College facilities, surrounding building areas, and set-up needs. The specific duties, tasks, or combinations of tasks may vary according to the assigned facilities; facility assignments may change to meet the needs of the department.
Performs all essential functions in accordance with all safety regulations and actively tries to eliminate safety hazards in the workplace.
This is a temporary position for high business demand and coverage of staff while on leave. Hours may vary and must be able to maintain an on-call status.
This position is limited to 520 hours in the fiscal year.
Custodial (90% of Time)- Perform cleaning and maintenance of College facilities. This includes but is not limited to cleaning classroom, common area, and meeting space furniture; cleaning light fixtures, windowsills, blinds; sweeping, mopping, wet mopping, stripping, waxing and buffing floors; vacuuming, spot cleaning and shampooing carpets; cleaning whiteboards; washing windows; collecting and dumping refuse; cleaning and sanitizing restroom fixtures, toilets, hardware, tile, mirrors, partitions, floors, etc.; ensuring the toilets and urinals are free of debris; cleaning stairways, corridors, walls and fixtures.
- Replace various expendable items and supplies as needed, such as toilet paper, paper towels, drinking cups, liquid soap and light bulbs.
- Move or relocate furniture according to room requirements for next occupants or class. This includes moving and setting up desks, chairs, stages, podiums, and furniture, miscellaneous equipment and supplies required for meetings and special events or setting up other furniture as required.
- Operate and clean various equipment, including power-cleaning equipment, such as buffers, scrubbers, and extractors.
- Maintain Custodial supply rooms in clean and safe order.
- Assist with monitoring building security by securing spaces, doors, and buildings. Refer any security or emergency issues to Lead Custodian or Director of Facilities.
- Remove debris from building entrances, surrounding sidewalks, and other areas as required.
- Act on customer special requests for removal of debris; cleanup of spills, and similar custodial needs. Perform specialized custodial work upon request of Facilities management.
- During certain periods, custodian may be required to perform a combination of the following functions, with the percentage of time spent performing each function to be decided by Facilities management.
- Attend various meetings, complete required training, and follow College and departmental policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum of one (1) year of custodial experience.
Successful applicants for this position must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Ability to read English sufficient to read department equipment manuals, caution notices, safety manuals, written instructions and similar written materials.
- Basic mathematical skills, including trade mathematics (addition and subtraction) necessary to inventory and verify inventories.
- Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of cleaning floors, restrooms, glass, mirrors, objects, and surfaces within assigned areas.
- Working knowledge of the equipment, safety procedures, and work hazards.
- Requires sufficient skill and the ability to: operate push and hand brooms; electric vacuums and buffers; prepare and apply cleaning solutions and waxes; remove dirt, grease, dust, and fingerprints from surfaces.
- Requires sufficient reading skills to read label, instructions, measurement devices and similar, basic mathematical skills, and writing skills to document activity.
- Good verbal communication and customer service skills
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with general supervision.
- Ability to operate custodial equipment, such as, but not limited to, commercial carpet cleaning, high power sprayers, and common custodial equipment.
- Ability to work closely with other Facilities staff and follow instructions
- Ability to use sound judgement related to time management and escalating situations to the supervisor.
- Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.
- Ability to work consistently within the framework of collegiality and teamwork for problem solving in the workplace.
- Sufficient computer literacy to produce documents or reports as may be required by the position.
