The Therapeutic Physical Education Teacher is responsible for developing physical education programs and curriculum for all hospital programs / units; monitors equipment and runs therapeutic activities in groups which will increase sportsmanlike conduct and the students’ abilities to be part of a group. The programs will also be designed to help build trust and create team building, increase personal responsibility and positive interactions with others, to problem solve, and help change behavior of the participating students. Note: This position will work between our Bridgeville RTF and Canonsburg RTF.
Responsibilities
Unit Specific Performance Objectives
1. Develops physical education programs for all Southwood Programs.
2. Creates rules and materials lists, monitors equipment
3. Attends in-service programs upon supervisor direction
4. Runs therapeutic activities in groups designed to help build trust and create team building, increase personal responsibility and positive interactions with others, to problem solve and help change behavior.
5. Works cooperatively with teachers and residential treatment team; reports progress or lack of progress of individual students.
6. Creates individual and group goals and objectives to support progress and success.
7. Completes documentation and lesson plans.
8. Counsels and processes with individuals and groups of children regarding troubling and unacceptable behaviors.
9. Provides group behavior management skills.
10. Identifies and acts to prevent potential crisis situations appropriately.
11. Engages in de-escalation techniques to avoid incidents.
12. Interacts with students positively and supportively
13. Discusses and debriefs incidents and problem solves with student/class
14. Utilizes behavior modification strategies
15. Participates in own performance process
16. Possess knowledge of age-specific growth and development
17. Maintains competence in identified universal, core and critical competencies
18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Education or related field which is eligible for teacher certification or license within the state where the facility is located is required.
- One or more years’ experience working with groups of children with emotional, social and behavioral difficulties.
- Must be knowledgeable of the developmental stages and behaviors for age group of students.
LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Current certification or license to teach within the state where the facility is located.
- CPR and de-escalation/restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
- First aid may be required based on state or facility.
