Position Summary:

Sovah Martinsville is seeking a fulltime Special Procedures Respiratory Therapist to examine patients with breathing-related conditions and conduct diagnostic testing. Consult with physicians to develop and implement a treatment plan for the patient. Performs physiotherapy and other treatments and teaches patients to use medications.

  • Measures lung capacity and analyzes blood samples using a blood gas analyzer.
  • Delivers and assesses response to ordered therapy per plan of care. Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Evaluate respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices.
  • Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance. Assesses patient condition and delivers appropriate treatment.
  • Educates the patient and family about the patient's illness and provides information about community support groups and other resources.
  • Monitors, receives stocks, and distributes respiratory care supplies and medical gas cylinders.
  • Maintains storage areas with required supply levels and equipment.
  • Disassembles, cleans, and sterilizes equipment, and performs preventative maintenance and calibration of machines.
  • Provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on physician-prescribed patients with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary dysfunction, utilizing state-of-the-art procedures and bio-medical equipment.

  • Coordinates and participates in administering medical gas therapy, humidity therapy, aerosol therapy; NT, ETT, tracheostomy suctioning, and tracheostomy care.
  • Chest physical therapy, hyperinflation therapy, treatments, and the administration of medications used in respiratory care procedures in accordance with physicians' orders.

  • Performs twelve channel electrocardiograph examinations.
  • Performs the more complex respiratory care procedures to include calibrating , setting up and monitoring of mechanical ventilators, blood gas analyzers, Bronchoscopy equipment and pulse oximeters.
  • Evaluates, initiates, monitors and weans patients from mechanical ventilation.
  • Performs Holter Monitoring set-up, instruction and analysis.
  • Performs Event Recorder set-up, instruction, and data collection.
  • Participates as a member of the cardiac Arrest Team responding to emergency or STAT calls to establish natural and artificial airways, including oro/naso endotracheal intubations.

  • Provide clinical instruction on the proper use of equipment to hospital staff and patients; make rounds with physicians to discuss preferred treatment methods for individual patients.
  • Set up and perform arterial catheterization. Monitor and troubleshoot homodynamic equipment.
  • Participates in the routine maintenance of equipment; makes periodic rounds to ensure proper functioning of bio-medical equipment.
  • Transport patients requiring manual ventilatory support or supplemental oxygen to various locations within the hospital or to other hospitals.
  • Assists in the orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Performs simple portable spirometry.
  • Posts charges into the hospital information system.
  • Participates in department's Quality Assurance Program.
  • Participates in preoperative and post-operative evaluations of patients.

  • Performs therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopy including Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), and Navigational Bronchoscopy.
  • Participates in rotated department staffing calls as assigned by the Director of Pulmonary Services or the Patient Care Coordinator.
  • Performs Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) -Martinsville Campus Only.


Minimum Education:

  • Graduate of an approved Respiratory Care Program, with an A.A.S. degree, or Certification of Graduation.

Required Skills:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity, and eye and hand coordination.
  • Requires standing, walking, stooping, and stretching. Occasionally lifts, carries, and pushes items weighing up to 100 lbs. (Mechanical ventilators, electrocardiographs, stretchers, and patient care carts).
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions and extended shifts.

Required Certifications/Licenses:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR Coach Certification.
  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Certification by the American Heart Association in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Basic Life Support.
  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT).

Minimum Work Experience:

  • One year of critical care experience, including hemodynamic monitoring, bronchoscopy assistance, mechanical ventilation set-up, management, and patient care assessment.
  • One year of routine respiratory care experience is required.
  • Graduation from an Associate Degree level program can be substituted for one year of experience.
