POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the guidance of the Parenting Program Manager, the Parenting Instructor will be responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and facilitating parenting education programs in both English and Spanish for parents and caregivers involved with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). This position focuses on promoting child safety, strengthening parenting skills, and supporting families in developing healthy relationships. The instructor will provide direct support to parents, connect them to community resources, and track program data to assess effectiveness.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Schedule, coordinate and facilitate parenting classes in both Spanish and English using evidence-based curricula, including Nurturing Parenting.
- Assist parents in identifying and accessing community services that address their family’s needs, while helping them recognize their strengths and implement positive parenting practices.
- Track attendance, participation, and program-specific information for accurate reporting and program evaluation.
- Administer evaluations, interpret, and analyze findings to provide actionable insights and recommendations for program improvement.
- Complete intake and assessment for families, develop family support plans, and provide follow- up services to assess case progress and identify additional needs.
- Maintain consistent communication with caregivers through individual appointments, phone calls, and emails.
- Record all actions taken for each DCFS case using the required database and related filing system.
- Conduct home visits to encourage, model, and coach appropriate behavior management and modification techniques.
- Establish a rapport with parents and offer support to enhance their understanding of child development and strengthen their parenting skills.
- Serve as a resource and advocate for caregivers navigating any pending cases with DCFS.
- Ensure confidentiality and compliance with applicable laws, regulations and professional standards.
- Participate in community activities, networking, and outreach events to promote parenting education and available resources.
- Engage in professional development opportunities, including certification programs, to stay current with best practices in parenting education and child welfare.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed to support the needs of the program and agency.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Applied Behavioral Science, or a related field
- Fluent in reading, writing and speaking in Spanish
- At least two (2) years of experience in parenting education, child welfare, social services or related fields. Experience working with DCFS-involved families is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of child development, family dynamics, and trauma-informed practices.
- Demonstrated high quality interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Professional demeanor and ability to prioritize responsibilities and function effectively during stressful or busy periods.
- High degree of cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively with families from diverse racial, socio-economic, ethnic and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to engage, assess, motivate, and support participants using advocacy and coaching skills that are compassionate, strengths-based, and non-judgmental.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday–Friday; 9am–5pm
Evenings and weekends as needed
