The Assistant Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and lead assistant superintendent. This position helps direct and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways and cartpaths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. This position may serve in the Golf Course Superintendents absence.
Essential Functions:
- Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, clubhouse grounds, and landscape areas.
- Supervises the employees and the use of equipment.
- Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
- Supervises and participates in pesticide/fertilizer applications and or operates and calibrates pesticide/fertilizer application equipment.
- Participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and control system.
- Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline and may also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
- Oversees the completion of work assignments by crew and assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards and equipment use and work methods.
- Assists in overseeing club grounds including environmentally sensitive areas in and around the golf course.
- Manages the maintenance facility and runs operations in the absence of Superintendent or lead assistant.
- Manages the winter operations including but not limited to property snow removal, grooming and other club assistance as directed by Superintendent and lead assistant.
Qualifications:
- Requires working knowledge of the management and maintenance of golf course tees, greens, and fairways. The seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, and trees. Pest control methods and materials, drainage control methods, and irrigation system control, including but not limited to wells, pumps, controllers, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products
- Requires ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment. Prepare clear and concise reports, and to maintain effective employee and public relations.
- Requires valid driver’s license.
- Will require current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.
- Skills in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.
- Computer skills in word/excel/power point.
- 2-4-year degree or certificate in turf management or related field.
