Programs include: early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. Department Summary
The Economic Development Department aims to revitalize disinvested communities and ensure that all residents and businesses in our programs can shape urban development and benefit from economic growth in an equitable fashion. Services include: 1) workforce development programs and human services referrals at our Career & Resource Center and our Green Jobs Training Center 2) small-business development and access to capital at our Business Assistance Center; 4) and a variety of neighborhood services that include seasonal special events, civic and community engagement, arts and culture, and urban planning. Services are multi-lingual, culturally rooted and available for all Oakland or East Bay residents (based on funding).
Position Summary
The Business Engagement Assistant leads community outreach and education initiatives for the Economic Development department, including door-to-door engagement and large event planning. This role manages client services at the Career & Resource Center and Business Assistance Center, handling intake assessments, program orientations, and referrals. Key responsibilities include maintaining client records, coordinating front desk coverage with staff and interns, and overseeing computer room operations. The Assistant also plans and provides support for major community events while ensuring smooth daily operations of both centers when assigned.
Responsibilities
- Conduct community outreach across Oakland, Contra Costa, and Southern Alameda Counties to promote Unity Council's Business Assistance Center and Career & Resource Center services.
- Manage front desk operations, providing superior customer service.
Process client orientations, intake assessments, and program referrals.
- Handle appointment scheduling and ITIN application support.
- Maintain accurate client records and referral partner database.
- Ensure client privacy and data confidentiality.
- Collaborate with Economic Development team members on community projects and large community events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school or GED completion required.
- 6 months’ experience providing administrative support or reception services.
- Multi-cultural competency and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Friendly demeanor and able to provide excellent service to walk-in clients and guests.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal communication and ability to present information.
- Ability to work in an efficient manner with time sensitive tasks and manage timelines.
- Weekend availability for rotating Saturdays is required.
Essential Functions
- Advanced computer skills with strong MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media skills.
- Regularly required to operate standard office equipment (personal computer, photocopier, fax, etc.).
- Regularly required to sit for long periods of time and occasionally stand and walk.
- Regularly required to use hands to operate computer and other office equipment.
