Position Summary:
The primary function of the Environmental Services Technician is to perform cleaning and maintenance duties at various contract sites, ensuring sanitary and secure environments. Responsibilities include traveling to assigned locations and performing comprehensive janitorial tasks such as trash removal, restroom cleaning, floor care, and restocking supplies. Additionally, the Environmental Services Technician maintains necessary documentation and adheres to agency policies. The role requires strong time management, communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Flexibility, attention to detail, and the capability to manage physical demands are essential to the Janitor role.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Site Preparation & Travel: Collect necessary cleaning supplies and equipment, travel to assigned contract sites, and ensure proper entry, security, and reporting upon arrival. (Essential and Non-Modifiable)
  • Comprehensive Janitorial Services: Perform all assigned cleaning tasks, including but not limited to: (Essential and Non-Modifiable)
    • Emptying trash and replacing liners.
    • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, including fixtures, sinks, and mirrors.
    • Restocking paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, and other necessary supplies.
    • Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and maintaining floors.
    • Dusting surfaces, cleaning baseboards, and washing windows.
    • Cleaning air vents and maintaining overall site cleanliness.
  • Security & Compliance: Ensure buildings are properly secured upon exiting, following site-specific security protocols. (Essential and Non-Modifiable)
  • Equipment & Supply Management: Return vehicles (if applicable) and cleaning supplies to the designated location after completing assigned tasks. (Essential and Non-Modifiable)
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of work completed and submit required documentation in compliance with agency policies and funding sources requirements. (Essential and Non-Modifiable)
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Promote and maintain a safe work environment by adhering to health and safety regulations. This may include the occasional need to provide first aid or emergency assistance that promotes the health, safety, and well-being of persons supported. (Essential and Non-modifiable)

Skills Needed:
  • Must be detail-oriented with excellent time management and organizational skills, with a proven ability to consistently meet competing deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
  • Must demonstrate problem-solving techniques and effectively oversee/monitor the program area and duties.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and establish rapport with diverse staff and individuals, including the individuals supported, staff, families, guardians, and members of the Sparc community.
Education/Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of work experience in a customer service role and/or healthcare setting is required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of work experience in an independent/autonomous role with minimal supervision is required, including the ability to work independently and exercise judgment that coincides with Sparc’s mission, vision, core values, and philosophies.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, elderly populations, or in a healthcare setting is preferred.
Other Requirements:
  • A minimum age of 18 years old.
  • Must have a current, valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Must have reliable transportation and current, valid proof of automobile insurance.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of work experience with the demonstrated ability to operate and maintain different types of janitorial equipment is required.
  • Must possess the physical ability to assist persons served with mobility as needed, including the ability to perform physical activities related to providing direct support for individuals served.
  • Attend and satisfactorily complete all training requirements and mandatory staff meetings.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Experience in floor care/general maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience working in a physically demanding position, including the ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. frequently, the ability to bend, stoop, twist, turn, squat, climb stairs, walk, and stand stationary. Must be able to physically manage any special needs of individuals supported by Sparc, including the ability to lift and transfer supported persons as needed and assist program staff in emergencies.

Working Conditions:
  • Work locations include the Sparc Work Center, The Baxter Center, and various JTP contractual work sites. Some locations may expose the employee to mild to moderately high noise levels.
  • Safety and security procedures for each work site must be followed.
  • Staff in this role may be exposed to various illnesses and diseases as well as hazardous and toxic chemicals, with some exposure to physically threatening clients, bodily fluids, bloodborne and airborne diseases, viruses, communicable diseases, etc.
