GENERAL DEFINITION:
Performs complex professional work developing, planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office’s social media strategy; develops external communications for the Sheriff’s Office, ensuring its message is consistent, engaging, and advances the agency’s goals. To include but not limited to managing media relations, public messaging, internal and external communications, website updates, social media content creation and branding efforts. Does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of Public Information Officer / Crime Prevention Officer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Social Media & Content Creation
- Stay up to date with social media trends and algorithm changes to optimize engagement.
- Develop, implement, and manage social media strategies for Facebook and Instagram.
- Create engaging, accurate, and informative content that aligns with the Sheriff’s Office mission.
- Ensure all social media content adheres to branding guidelines and maintains a professional image.
- Analyze performance metrics and provide monthly reports on engagement and effectiveness (newsletter or report)
- Respond promptly to requests from the PIO and all other divisions.
Media & Public Relations
- Draft and publish public media releases, critical incident updates, missing person’s alerts, and more in a timely manner.
- Manage internal email communications and coordinate messaging across departments.
- Attend and document Sheriff’s Office events such as swearing-in ceremonies, award banquets, training sessions, demonstrations, and community outreach programs.
Photography, Videography & Graphic Design
- Capture high-quality photos and videos using an iPhone and Canon EOS Rebel T7 camera.
- Edit visual content using Adobe Premiere, Adobe Lightroom, Canva, and CapCut.
- Maintain a consistent visual identity across all platforms through branded graphics and multimedia content.
- Actively seek out and document content that showcases the daily work of deputies and staff.
Website Management
- Maintain, update, and edit the Civic Plus websites for SpartanburgCounty.org and JoinSCSO.org.
- Ensure timely posting of major news releases, announcements, and department highlights.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of social media management, digital branding, and content marketing.
- Proficiency in Adobe Premiere, Adobe Lightroom, Canva, and website content management systems.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with various divisions and personnel.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects with shifting deadlines.
- After hour availability.
MUST BE ABLE TO:
- Prepared to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions (high/low temperatures, rain, etc.).
- Comfortable working in diverse environments, including open fields, abandoned buildings, wooded areas, and high-risk locations.
- Ability to operate and document events in various settings, including ATVs, boats, helicopters and other law enforcement scenarios.
- Comfortable around firearms and working dogs.
- Handle confidential information discreetly.
· Possess driver's license valid in the State of South Carolina. Follow county vehicle operation policy.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in journalism, mass communications, public relations or related field and 2 – 4 years of experience working in a marketing, communications, or public relations position. Established media relations and web management is a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be physically able to exert up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to walk and/or stand for long periods of time. Work frequently climbing, bending, stooping, reaching, etc.
