HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER AIDE - Study Hall and Classroom Monitor
Position Summary The Teacher Aide will provide essential support to the high school educational environment by supervising study halls, monitoring classrooms during teacher absences and planning periods, and assisting with various instructional and administrative tasks. This position creates a positive, productive learning atmosphere that allows students to work independently while maintaining appropriate conduct and academic focus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Study Hall Supervision
- Maintain a quiet, structured environment conducive to independent study and academic work
- Take accurate attendance at the beginning of each study hall period
- Monitor student activities to ensure they are engaged in appropriate academic work
- Assist students with basic academic questions and direct them to appropriate resources
- Enforce school policies regarding technology use, hall passes, and behavioral expectations
- Document and report any behavioral issues according to school protocols
Classroom Monitoring
- Cover classes during brief teacher absences, meetings, or planning periods as assigned
- Implement lesson plans or activities left by the classroom teacher
- Distribute and collect assignments, worksheets, or other materials
- Maintain classroom discipline and ensure students remain on task
- Document student behavior and work completion for the regular classroom teacher
Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 60 college credit hours (two years of college)
- Strong organizational and classroom management skills
- Excellent communication abilities with both students and staff
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and educational technology
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student information
- Clear background check and drug screening
- Patience and ability to work with diverse student populations
Preferred
- Associate's degree or bachelor's degree in education or related field
- Previous experience working in an educational setting
- Experience working with high school-aged students
- Knowledge of classroom management techniques
- Familiarity with common academic subjects at the high school level
- Experience working with students with diverse learning needs
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and move around a classroom for extended periods
- Ability to interact with students at eye level
- Capacity to access all areas of the school building
- Sufficient stamina to maintain student supervision throughout the school day
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations
Work Schedule
- Regular school days, Monday through Friday
- Typical hours: 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM (may vary based on school schedule)
- Occasional participation in after-school events or meetings may be required
Reporting Structure
Reports directly to the assigned Department Chair or Assistant Principal.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the direct supervisor in accordance with district policies.
