What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tech-Pharmacy Certified-Oncology position at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System?
Position Summary
This is a 100% IV room job. Would be responsible for all aspects of IV compounding, inventory, dispensing and distribution of hazardous and non-hazardous drugs in the oncology pharmacy under pharmacist supervision. Includes maintaining and complying with USP 797 standards for sterile compounding, and USP 800 standards for handling hazardous drugs including proper PPE garbing, proper use of primary and secondary engineering controls, deactivating/decontaminating/cleaning areas where hazardous drugs are handled, handling of hazardous drug waste, and testing. Training of new technicians on proper compounding procedure. Regularly working in the environment of hazardous drugs and sterile compounding is required.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- High School Graduate (or GED) Required
- Graduate of accredited Pharmacy Technician Program
Experience
- 2 years of IV Room experience
License/Registration/Certifications
- Must be registered as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy intern with the SC Board of Pharmacy
- National Pharmacy Technician Certification and State Certification

Core Job Responsibilities
- Follows attendance, dress, education (including continuing education) and safety polices
- Complies with appropriate regulatory agencies’ requirements, e.g. DHEC, DEA, etc.
- Pulls appropriate medication based on labels and documents these activities in the electronic medical record.
- Identifies critical issues and prioritizes workload.
- Unpacking drug orders as needed, verifying correctness, and delivery to the correct stock location.
- Working with pharmacy buyer to complete medication counts and ensure appropriate stock for future treatments.
- Stocks and checks assigned areas of the Pharmacy for regulatory compliance with medication storage.
- Accurately prepares sterile IV medications (admixtures, mini bags, syringes, and fluids) utilizing a laminar flood hood according to guidelines and USP 797 aseptic technique. Utilizes established guidelines to determine the correct diluents and diluent volume to reconstitute sterile powders and to identify agent requiring special admixing precautions. Performs calculations necessary to determine the amount of reconstituted drug needed to prepare admixture doses, as well as to calculate additive volumes for large volume admixture preparation.
- Accurately prepares sterile IV Hazardous medications (admixtures, mini bags, syringes, and fluids) in Biological Safety Cabinet according to USP 797 and USP 800 guidelines. Utilizes established guidelines to determine the correct diluents and diluent volume to reconstitute sterile powders and to identify agent requiring special admixing precautions. Performs calculations necessary to determine the amount of reconstituted drug needed to prepare admixture doses, as well as to calculate additive volumes for large volume admixture preparation
- Handles hazardous waste in a manner compliant with EPA, NIOSH, and per hospital policies.
- Utilizes closed system transfer device to limit potential exposure of the environment to hazardous medications.
- Daily IV room cleaning of hoods, countertops, floors, sinks, and doors.
- Monthly deep cleaning of IV room per USP 797 and USP 800
