What are the responsibilities and job description for the Foster Coordinator position at SPCA of Northern Nevada?

The SPCA of Northern Nevada is looking for a Foster Coordinator to join our team and help expand our lifesaving foster program.

This role is perfect for an animal advocate who excels at relationship-building, organization, and neonatal care. If you have experience working with foster programs, love educating others, and are dedicated to giving animals their best chance at success, we want to hear from you!

What You’ll Do:

Foster Program Management:

  • Recruit, train, and support foster volunteers, ensuring they have the resources and guidance they need to succeed.
  • Match foster animals with appropriate families based on their skills, experience, and home environment.
  • Track foster statistics to inform program improvements and growth.
  • Develop and maintain efficient structures and documentation for the foster program.
  • Intake new foster animals and ensure their readiness for placement.
  • Communicate with rural rescue partners regarding interim care for underage animals, transfer of foster candidates, placement options, and supporting the development of their own foster programs.
  • Train SPCA-NN teammates to support foster placements and operations.

Neonatal & Juvenile Animal Care:

  • Provide direct care to neonatal and juvenile animals, ensuring they receive proper feeding, medical support, and developmental care.
  • Ability to offer in-home overnight care for underage animals that do not yet have foster placement.
  • Maintain the foster nursery by keeping supplies stocked, ensuring cleanliness, and following disease control protocols.
  • Assess age and developmental milestones to determine appropriate feeding and vaccination schedules.
  • Stay up to date on best practices in neonatal animal care and apply emerging research to improve outcomes.
  • Creatively address unexpected medical and behavioral challenges with foster animals.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Experience in animal welfare, foster coordination, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment – we are dealing with live animals and can’t always predict their needs!
  • Knowledge of neonatal and juvenile animal care, including feeding, medical needs, and developmental milestones.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to engage volunteers and rescue partners.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to unexpected medical or behavioral challenges.
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to work with a diverse range of people in a supportive and collaborative manner.
  • Commitment to SPCA-NN’s mission and a passion for saving animals’ lives.
  • Flexible schedule, including availability for occasional nights This position will require a weekend day.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and work in a physically active role.
  • English/Spanish bilingual would be a huge plus!
