What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Development and Community Engagement position at SPCA of Tompkins County?
We are looking for a dynamic and creative individual to join our small but mighty team in building relationships with supporters and partners while leading fundraising and community engagement efforts.

You’ll use your writing skills to engage our community, whether through social media, newsletters, or through meaningful gestures of appreciation to our supporters.
You will lead and implement creative fundraising campaigns and special events while building and maintaining strong relationships with donors, sponsors, and partners.
You will work in tandem with the Executive Director and key SPCA Staff to achieve yearly fundraising goals and community outreach.

Direct Mail:
Oversee all components of the direct mail program.
Write/edit (26) donor renewal and acquisition campaigns working with suggested content from our direct mail firm.
Ensure that donor data generated by the Development Assistant for the mailings is accurate and submitted on time.
Ensure that Development Assistant submits monthly constituent and transactional file of all donors and gifts for giving and trend analysis.
Ensure that donor data is processed through NCOA prior to acquisition mailings (3x per year) to update database with current addresses.
Meet monthly with direct mail firm to discuss upcoming campaigns and deadlines.
Events:
Serve as lead planner for yearly SPCA produced fundraising events including March for the Animals, Lover’s Loot, and the SPCA Calendar contest as well as local Giving Day Campaigns.
Provide support (marketing, promotion, awareness, logos, guidance) to community-produced events that benefit the SPCA.
Grants:
Coordinate application process for all organizational grants Gather necessary information and data from appropriate staff and department(s) to write the grant narrative. Utilize various online platforms for each granting agency to submit grant request and supporting materials. Ensure that all deadlines are met for submission and reporting requirements.
Major Gifts:
In coordination with Executive Director and Development Assistant, ensure that gifts from major donors are properly recorded, receipted, and acknowledged with handwritten thank you card.
Memorial/Honoraria Gift Program:
In coordination with Development Assistant, Acknowledge memorial and tribute gifts of any amount for people and animals with handwritten card to recipient and acknowledgement of gift to donor.
Recurring/monthly donors:
Oversee and manage recurring donor program and ensure that receipts are sent at the conclusion of the calendar year for cumulative donations. Provide stewardship for donors via a handwritten holiday card and special communicationor outreach. In coordination with the Development Assistant, monitor participation. Promote monthly giving via newsletter.
Corporate and Community Giving:
Engage and steward local and national businesses to ensure support of flagship shelter events. Identify new businesses to join existing corporate sponsors. Ensure corporate donors are widely promoted in newsletter, on social media, and to event participants.
Manage anonymous giving via donation boxes in local businesses, can and bottle drives, and business fundraisers to support shelter needs. Ensure that donation boxes are regularly emptied and money brought to the shelter and scanned register donations are submitted by business checks to the shelter. Work with local redemption center to ensure timely payments for cans/bottles processed. Support community engagement by providing wish lists and shelter logo for information to aid in hosting a successful fundraiser.
Monthly Reporting:
Working with Development Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator to generate monthly reporting for Executive Director and Board or Directors tracking fundraising goals and volunteer activities.
Donor stewardship:
Working with Development Assistant, ensure that any changes to donor contact information are entered into database, and all fields are accurate. In tandem with Executive Director and Development Assistant, ensure that all gift receipts are e-mailed or printed and mailed based on donor direction and processed in a timely manner. In partnership with Executive Director, send handwritten thank you cards, etc. to all donors making gifts over a certain threshold, as well as all volunteer gifts of any amount. Return phone calls and emails to donors in a timely manner and address all concerns quickly to allay any donor concerns.
Marketing and donor/community outreach:
Serve as editor, primary writer, and content provider for periodic publication of electronic newsletter, Tailbearer.
Working with other SPCA staff responsible for social media, ensure regular posts and monitoring of incoming messages. Ensure all account managers have needed information about the shelter for account followers.
Volunteer Outreach and Management:
Working in partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator, work with the SPCA board Community Engagement Committee to strengthen outreach and events that engage volunteers, donors, and the public.
Salary : $60,000 - $70,000
