Central Sterile Technician
General Summary:
Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.
Essential Job Functions:

Utilizes principles of safety and infection control, including universal precautions, while

Decontaminating and sterilizing instruments, medical supplies and equipment; assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.

Monitoring biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.

Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes defective equipment.

Maintains a clean work area.

Reviews and completes applicable checks and maintenance of sterilizers, washers and ultrasonic cleaner, ensuring adequacy and accuracy of the records, and to monitor the equipment’s operation and effectiveness.

Attends and participates in hospital/departmental meetings as required.

Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.

Initiates Biomed or Facilities work orders when needed

Assists in maintaining records for sterilizer loads and equipment tests

Identifies broken/malfunctioning instruments

Uses FIFO principle to store processed surgical instrumentations in designated areas.

Follows manufacturer recommendations when operating SPD equipment
-
Restocks par level of decontamination protective supplies (gloves, masks with face shield, gowns) and cleaning solutions (detergents, enzymatic cleaner, lubricant)
-
Refers to surgery and endoscopy schedule to plan and prepare for needs of the day.

Properly stores sterile sets and peel packs in designated areas.
-
Cares for all instruments individually based on design function and delicacy.

Cleans and processes flexible and rigid endoscopes.
-
Reassembles instruments sets as it is listed on count sheets.
-
Recognizes and replaces broken instrumentations in sets.
-
Reviews SPD supply inventory and initiate orders as necessary.

Qualifications:
-
Education
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred: Successful completion SPD Technician course preferred
Certification within one (1) year of hire for non-certified technicians

Work Experience
Required:
Preferred: 1 or more years in a medical or healthcare setting

Licensure/Certifications/Registrations
Required: BLS – Healthcare Provider – Within 6 Months of Hire Date
