Medical Assistant Apprentice
General Summary:
The Medical Assistant Apprentice will function in a training capacity, working alongside their Assigned Clinical Instructor while completing their job functions. The Medical Assistant Apprentice will assist providers and the care team in the care of patients, promoting a smooth flow of patients through the office and help to create a calm, supportive atmosphere. The Medical Assistant Apprentice will only independently perform those skills for which they have demonstrated competency. These skills will include clinical and clerical duties as necessary to care for patients.
Essential Job Functions
- Shadow clinical instructor and accompany patient to exam room during onboarding and initial training.
- Prepare patient for examination. Upon demonstrated proficiency will obtain vital signs, and review and enter patient medications and allergies.
- Demonstrate proficiency administering immunizations and/or medications as directed by the physician or advanced practitioner and document in the EMR.
- Demonstrate proficiency in performing C LIA waived in office testing and document results in the EMR Is able to document
- Demonstrate proficiency performing ECGs as directed by practitioner.
- Other clinical duties as assigned
- Demonstrate proficiency in performing clerical duties as needed to include answering of phone, booking of registration, scanning, filing and abstracting and other clerical duties as assigned
- Comply with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.
- Demonstrate hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
- Meet department customer service standards and strive to enhance the level of customer service provided.
Qualifications:
- Education
Required: high school diploma or GED
- Work Experience
Required: 1 year experience in a health care setting

- Program Duration:
- Medical Assistant Apprentices will retain this designation for the duration of their onboarding period. The apprenticeship period conclude after 90 days and the successful completion of at least 50% of clinical competencies.
The MA training program should take one year from start to finish, but may vary depending on the individual, the time required to demonstrate competency, and full completion of academic coursework. Should the trainee require additional time to complete the academic coursework, the supervisor will need to complete a learning needs assessment and present a plan for completion.
- Demonstration of Proficiency
Proficiency in a clinical skill is achieved when the CI has observed the trainee perform the required skill 3 times without cues or input from the instructor.
2-Year Commitment
The medical assistant apprenticeship program represents a significant financial commitment on the part of Speare Memorial Hospital. Trainees who are selected to participate in the MA training program will be asked to sign a commitment to stay with the organization for at least two full years following completion of the program. Employees who terminate their employment before the end of the two year commitment will reimburse a pro-rated amount of the cost of the NHTI program.
