Who We Are

Spearmint Energy ("Spearmint") is a next-generation renewable energy company enabling the clean energy revolution through developing and installing battery energy storage systems (BESS). Spearmint currently operates a 150MW / 300 MWh BESS project located in West Texas, and is also developing over 20 projects, totaling over 10 GWh of capacity, across 11 states in 5 regions of the United States. Headquartered in Miami, Florida and with offices in the Eden Prairie neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Spearmint is comprised of over 60 seasoned industry professionals across development and corporate functions with the goal of becoming the preeminent green merchant energy company.

Spearmint develops, owns, operates, and optimizes battery energy storage systems with the aim of reducing grid volatility, increasing system resiliency, and helping minimize carbon emissions in a responsible and efficient way.

What You Will Do

This individual contributor role will report to the VP of Development as part of Spearmint's development business unit. Director level developers may have formal management or informal mentorship responsibilities for 1-3 others on the development team.

Core Responsibilities :

  • Manage the full project development lifecycle from site identification to financial close for multiple energy storage and, potentially, solar, and wind projects.
  • Identify and select viable sites for greenfield development by applying fundamental site criteria and negotiating, directly and via contract land agents, site control agreements with landowners.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel and senior members of the development team to draft and review project contract documents and agreements.
  • Represent the company in meetings with regulators, stakeholders, and landowner groups within rural, suburban, and urban communities.
  • Conduct high-level environmental and permitting site diligence, select and manage consulting teams for detailed project review and the full permitting process. Manage the transmission / interconnection process including the selection and management of interconnection consultants.
  • Identify business opportunities, form relationships with key utilities and other potential counterparties, and work with the finance team to assess the viability of project opportunities.
  • Develop and execute community engagement activities consistent with the company's brand objectives, work with internal and external engineering and construction teams to prepare cost estimates, identify constraints, and ensure safety requirements are met, and stay current with professional and industry best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies in health, safety, security, equity, ethics, and governance

Who You Are

  • Possess strong skills in managing core responsibilities of project development independently or with limited oversight, including managing client interactions and delivering projects on time and within budget.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Business / Management, Finance, Engineering, Natural Resources, or other relevant field, 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 25-50% of the time to project sites primarily in rural communities.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office and Outlook, and experience using ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and / or Google Earth required.
  • Work Environment and Physical Demands :

  • Primarily sedentary office duties with travel to company offices or development & construction sites. May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds (luggage and / or presentation materials) and may be required to sit, stand, walk and use a computer.
  • Development site work may occasionally require significant amounts of time outdoors in undeveloped areas, at all times of year, in all weather conditions, and across all climatic regions with which the company conducts business. Developers will occasionally be required to walk and / or stand for significant amounts of time over uneven terrain outdoors.
  • Follow traditional business hours, with occasional work outside of those hours to meet company objectives or as necessary to fully engage stakeholders (e.g. evening community meetings)
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • This role requires, at times, air and car travel including driving to remote sites along with office work in field conditions. Driving may require operating vehicles off-road in various conditions on development and / or construction sites. Some sites may require travel in small regional jet or prop airliners and stays at limited-service hotels.
