Job Description: Speech Language Pathologist
Assist in developing speech and language skills to facilitate and enhance communication skills within the educational setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology
- Valid Speech Language Pathologist issued by the New Mexico Speech Language Pathology & Audiology Board
- New Mexico Public Education Department Speech Language Pathologist license required.
- Experience: Prior experience in school/pediatric settings preferred
Reports to:
- School Principals and Director of Special Education
Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good organizational ability.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to maintain high level of professionalism and confidentiality regarding students, staff, parents, and school matters.
Primary Responsibilities:
- If a student is a speech only student and you serve as the case manager, have every teacher, educational assistant, and therapist that works with one of your students sign off on your signature sheet that they have received a copy and read the modification/accommodation page and goals of the IEP. It is also your responsibility to make sure that they are following the modifications and accommodations or BIP in the classroom or in therapy. When a student has had a new IEP during the school year, this process needs to be repeated.
- Assist in the early recognition and prevention of educational problems related to articulation or language delays.
- Provide therapy to remediate these delays to assist with increased educational growth.
- Stay current on evidence-based strategies and resources that can be utilized in your therapy.
- Monitor student progress and make informed, timely decisions that assist in increasing student's educational performance.
- Conduct speech and language screenings and diagnostic evaluations to determine the need for direct services. When testing students, please remember that to qualify in an educational setting, there must be an educational need. The NM TEAM provides guidance on what components of an evaluation to determine eligibility for SLI, Autism, etc.
- Participate as a team member in the comprehensive evaluation, IEP meetings, and the re-evaluation process.
- If you are scheduling IEPS, send schedules to the building secretary and principal. If a substitute is needed, please plan IEPS accordingly (1/2 day or full day). Send the IEP schedules to the special education secretary as well.
- Have your portion of the IEP completed before the IEP. Participate in the IEP to assist with building the best holistic program for that specific child.
- Make sure that you go over every page of the IEP during IEP meetings. It can be tedious but SPED must ensure that the parents/guardians have heard everything on their student's IEP. There may be questions they have, and they will be able to have them answered at the IEP. We also want transparency for the parents where they know exactly what services their children will be receiving before they sign.
- Attempt to have all IEPs as error free as possible when an IEP meeting is concluded. Double check the IEP. It is very time consuming for a secretary to correct errors before finalizing and enter data into PowerSchool.
- Provide direct therapy per student's IEP. Provide monitoring services per student's IEP. See students on your caseload the amount listed on IEPs. If you miss a therapy session, unless a student is absent or attending a school function, you are required to make that time up during the school year. (A sheet to track your missed sessions and when you make them up is included in your packet). When you are providing make-up therapy, make sure that it is not during another therapy pull-out time for the student. Also, work with the teacher to find a time that works for both of you.
- Update each student's goal pages every 9 weeks and send to parents. This is non- negotiable.
- Complete current Medicaid billing completed bi-weekly.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with staff and students. Understand your role within the school setting and remain within your discipline's boundaries.
- Establish and maintain a positive climate for learning through appropriate management of students during therapy.
- Ensure that you always follow the policies and procedures of the Artesia Public Schools and APS special education.
- Maintain appropriate records per Artesia Public Schools special education department.
- Supervise and train staff members you have been assigned.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
