Speech, Language and Hearing Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Massachusetts certification in the field of Speech, Language and Hearing Handicapped.
  2. Bachelors’ and/or Master’s Degree in Speech, Language, Hearing and related fields.
  3. Experience in diagnosis and treatment of children with expressive disorders as they relate to total communication.
  4. Alternatives to the above qualifications may be found appropriate and acceptable to the Committee.
  5. This Committee shall consist of Administrators and existing Speech, Language and Hearing Specialists.    

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To identify, diagnose and remediate speech, language and hearing difficulties within the Barnstable School System as required by Chapter 766.
  2. To be actively involved in the TEAM Evaluation Meetings in each school.
  3. Screening and Evaluation
  4. The population to be screened shall include preschool, kindergarten and those students previously enrolled in the program, and all new students to the school system.
  5. The population to be evaluated shall be children with a wide variety of communicative disorders, referrals from parents, school administrators, teaching personnel, physicians, allied professionals and other interested individuals within the community.
  6. Screening procedures shall be given uniformly by all testers, taking into consideration individual needs and levels of functioning. These procedures should include pre posttests, screening levels and a criterion for failure.
  7. Any pupil diagnosed as deaf, heard-of-hearing, voice disordered, tongue thrust, or diffluent should be assessed by the appropriate medical specialist, or psychologist prior to further program planning by the Speech, Language and Hearing Specialists.
  8. The Speech, Language and Hearing Specialist who assesses a child for a TEAM Evaluation may participate in staffing and writing an educational Plan for that child.
  9. Management
  10. Will work with the Evaluation Team and other support personnel in a multi-disciplinary team approach to develop educational plans and provide therapeutic management for children with communicative disorders.
  11. Will act as a consultant with parents and teachers to develop programs in coordination with the therapy being provided.
  12. Will keep in contact with administrators and other personnel directly involved with the child.
  13. Records and Reports
  14. Progress reports for pupils receiving services shall be prepared at quarterly intervals and shall become a part of each pupil’s case record. A final summary report shall be prepared at such time when services are terminated.
  15. Speech, language and hearing individual case records shall be considered official school records and subject as such to general regulations regarding such records. They shall be kept in a manner which assures security, continuity and confidentiality.
  16. A release signed by a parent or guardian shall be obtained as authorization for program staff to forward case record information to other responsible parties outside the school system. Notation shall be made whenever information is released.
  17. Caseload requirements for itinerant speech, language and hearing specialists shall be flexible enough to provide individualized services in direct accord with diagnosed pupil needs.
