DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Special Education, the Occupational Therapist provides assessment, consultation and direct occupational therapy to students enrolled in or referred to special education programs throughout Santee School District at various school sites.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assesses student’s skills and abilities in oral motor, sensory integration, motor planning, fine motor, developmental function, and activities of daily living, range of motion, reflex integration and postural tone.

Writes assessment reports describing results of these assessment areas.

Provides interpretation and summaries of assessment results to parents and IEP teams. Participates in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting to develop/update annual goals and short-term objectives.

Consults with family and staff on the appropriate implementation of educational programs as they relate to the development of motor skills.

Recommends appropriate materials.

Demonstrates educational and developmental strategies.

Suggests appropriate activities to accomplish motor goals set in the IEP. Provides direct occupational therapy services as indicated in the IEP.

Monitors pupil progress and informs parents and teachers of student progress, acts as liaison to district staff, physicians, parents and other agencies in implementing the student’s JEP.

Provides in-service training for teachers, instructional assistants and parents in the area of specialty.

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

 

Knowledge of:

Intellectual, sensory, and physical development of children.

Techniques used in the assessment and treatment of disabilities.

Educational and developmental needs of children with specific disabilities.

Skill in the application of occupational therapy techniques in working with children with disabilities.

 

Ability to:

Make accurate assessments of the developmental status and education needs of children. Work collaboratively in trans-disciplinary teams.

Work collaboratively with families and district staff.

Judge normal and abnormal motor development of children.

Determine educational and developmental areas of concern.

Work collaboratively with families and district staff.

Make oral presentations to staff and large and small groups.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Work effectively with individuals from various ethnic and cultural groups.

Safely lift and move students, with assistance, as needed.

Work effectively with minimal supervision.

 

Certification and Licenses:

Verification of certification by the National Board of Certification for Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) if required prior to appointment. Possession of a First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

 

Training and Experience: Graduation from an approved school of occupational therapy. Supervised. Experience in occupational therapy, including pediatrics and sensory motor evaluation and training. Additional instruction in child development, including neurological, physical, and psychological training is recommended; Clinical affiliation in pediatrics is desirable; Experience working with children in an occupational therapy or educational setting is desirable.

 

Working Conditions:

Will be working at multiple elementary school sites each day, in classrooms, labs and outside. Possession of a valid California driver’s license and availability of private transportation (mileage expense allowance provided).
