PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant provides speech-language services to eligible students.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Current License as a Speech-Language Pathology  Assistant from the Texas State Board of Examiners (SBOE) for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
  • Minimum of 50 hours observation and direct clinical service as directed by the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant’s license requirements
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Plans and provides appropriate therapy services to assigned students consistent with speech/language goals contained in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) under the direction of the licensed supervisor
  • Participates in annual Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings if: a) meets requirements set forth by licensing board and b) is approved by the licensed supervisor
  • Participates with supervisor in determining student progress on annual goals/objectives
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom based activities to improve oral and written language skills of assigned students under the direction of the licensed supervisor
  • Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and data documentation as required by district guidelines
  • Administers routine tests as directed by the supervisor, when the licensed supervisor has assured proper training and administration of such tests.
  • Complies with policies established by Federal and State laws, State Board of Education rules and State Licensing Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
  • Maintains a positive and effective relationship with supervisors, colleagues, teachers, parents, and Administrators
  • Assists in the selection of appropriate therapy/teaching materials, using a variety of activities to develop student interest and performance
  • Assists in maintaining accurate student attendance and progress records that are appropriate and consistent with district guidelines
  • Creates a learning environment conducive to student intellectual, social, emotional, and character development
  • Maximizes the amount of time available for instruction and delivery of services
  • Submits monthly School Health and Related Services (SHARS) claims for evaluation/therapy services, including documentation of data collection, signed by the licensed supervisor
  • Utilizes computer applications to document student progress, collect data, and maintain accurate records of student performance
  • Uses the district’s electronic mail system in accordance with JISD’s Acceptable User Policy
  • Develops needed professional skills related to job assignment
  • Maintains current license by acquiring the necessary Continuing Education Units, as mandated by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics        
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Equipment Used:

  • Office equipment – personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
  • Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
  • Video monitoring equipment

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling.
  • Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds; carrying, moderate, 15-44 pounds

 

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours.
