Job Summary

Position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring the division’s special education adapted curriculum programs for K through 12. Position chairs eligibility/IEP meetings and manifestation determination meetings; interprets state and federal regulations; develops the curriculum; provides staff development; supervises special education staff in assigned programs; and prepares/monitors the program budget.

 

Essential Duties

  1. Supervises and administers division-wide special education adapted curriculum programs (primarily serving students with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities and autism). Chairs eligibility and IEP meetings as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
  2. Interprets state and federal regulations governing special education and ensures compliance in assigned special education functional areas.
  3. Assists in curriculum development, implementation, and Provides guidance in the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials and equipment for the program.
  4. Visits schools and observes classrooms on a regular basis to ensure consistency of what is taught from school to school and teacher to teacher in the program.
  5. Serves as a resource and advisor to principals and teachers regarding assigned special education programs.
  6. Assists teachers in the improvement of instructional performance.
  7. Indirectly supervises school-based special education teachers and assists school principals with evaluating them.
  8. Supervises and evaluates the work of special education departmental personnel in assigned areas of responsibility.
  9. Evaluates the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs and recommend revisions and improvements as needed.
  10. Assists the Human Resources Department with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for special education instructional positions.
  11. Assists in developing and conducting division-wide staff development for special education instructional staff in assigned areas of responsibility.
  12. Prepares and monitors the program’s budjet.
  13. Coordinates meetings with specialists, department chairs, teachers, and administrators and disseminates information regarding current developments and teaching practices in the field.
  14. Supervises the ordering, inventory, and distribution of materials and equipment for assigned special education programs.
  15. Coordinates division-wide activities and events that promote academic and behavioral gains for special education students.
  16. Represents the school division in educational projects and initiatives at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
  17. Develops appropriate advocacy positions/statements for special education programs and the needs of special education students.
  18. Serves as resource to the division’s special education staff regarding instruction for students in adapted curriculum programs.
  19. Serves as LEA for all IEP/ESY/TCR/EC meetings for New Horizons Center for Autism (CFA).
  20. Applies and prepares all referrals needed for NNPS students referred to CFA.
  21. Serves as a facilitator for the Virginia Alternative Assessment Program (VAAP).
  22. Analyzes and interprets achievement data; and works with lead teachers/administrative staff to design activities to raise student achievement.
  23. Conducts in-service training for instructional staff regarding instructional strategies, best practices, and specific instructional topics.
  24. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

This position is paid in accordance with grade 44 of the pay plan. Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and training.
