DESCRIPTION:
The Unified Champion Schools (UCS) Coordinator will play an important role in supporting and managing school-based inclusion programming across the state of Idaho and supporting community integration. Additionally, this position will assist with meeting overall Special Olympics Idaho (SOID) strategy goals and objectives. This individual will recruit and work directly with teachers, coaches, student leaders, and administrators in assigned schools and help them manage quality UCS programming. This consists of Unified Sports (school-based teams composed of students with and without intellectual disabilities who train and compete together as equal peers), collaborative inclusive youth leadership and whole school engagement activities designed to promote awareness, education, and acceptance.
The ideal candidate will be motivated, professional, and organized and have a knack for research and building relationships. We’re looking for someone who believes in the mission of Special Olympics Idaho and has exceptional drive for furthering our reach in Idaho schools, colleges and universities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will assume the following responsibilities to support the overall Outreach & Education goals and objectives specifically in the area of school-based Unified Champion School initiatives. This position will be responsible for major aspects of this project to include but not limited to:
Recruit, develop and manage relationships with key staff and student leaders at assigned schools. Provide them with the resources, direct guidance, and support needed to achieve excellence in the following UCS components to ensure quality outcomes:
Unified Sports (US)
1. Train coaches and ensure they implement the principles of Unified Sports in their practices and competitions.
2. Provide recruitment strategies and support to ensure a sufficient number of special education and general education students are enlisted and committed to form UCS teams.
3. Schedule, plan and produce safe, well-organized, school supported tournaments, clinics and exhibitions around the state, ensuring all SOID policies and rules are being followed.
4. Coordinate competitions to events meets the quality standards established by SOID. This includes a sufficient number of well-trained officials and volunteers, enforcement of the rules, knowledge of the protocols, and necessary venue elements.
5. Provision of all materials and resources for effective and well-managed practices and competitions.
6. Collecting the required paperwork and entering data and information into the SOID data base.
Inclusive Youth Leadership
1. Work with the school faculty liaison to ensure an inclusive youth leadership club (students with and without intellectual disabilities) has an effective student governance structure; articulated goals and planned activities; and an understanding of how to best engage students with and without disabilities.
2. Provide guidance and resource support to ensure the UCS program objectives are being met.
Whole School Engagement Activities
1. Ensure the school is doing a minimum of two and preferably three school-wide engagement activities led by students which promote education and awareness about inclusion, social justice through sports, anti-bullying, and other school-climate focus areas.
2. Provide the necessary guidance, resources, and materials for successful outcomes.
3. Have the inclusive youth leadership club conduct these activities with other groups in the school such as the student council.
School Sustainability
1. Engage the inclusive youth leadership club in a fundraising activity to support UCS such as a Cool Schools Polar Plunge.
2. Help develop plans to meet an established goal by enlisting the involvement of other students and groups throughout the school.
3. Share registration materials and actively promote ideas and best practices.
Community Integration
1. Create/update resource materials on a yearly basis to include transition between grade levels as well as from school to community program.
2. Work with SOID staff and local program volunteers to develop local transition plans in line with the SOID Strategic Plan.
3. Participate in the Idaho Education Leaders Network organized by SOID.
Fulfill the following additional responsibilities for SOID and UCS:
1. Assist in completing monthly grant reports and funding application to national office.
2. Serve as point of contact for all Unified Champion Schools
3. Expense/Budget management
4. All expenses will be filed with
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with K-12 schools in managing or directing programs a plus.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including effective presentation skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and in conjunction with staff, coaches, educators and students.
- Proven ability to work and collaborate in diverse environments; Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
- Desire and commitment to work with individuals with intellectual disabilities and to opening the minds of all people to the gifts and talents of our athletes.
- Willingness to travel statewide and work a non-traditional 40 hour work week.
- Both nights and weekend work required.
- Willingness to work as a team player to enhance the overall Special Olympics Idaho program.
- Physical activity required, need to be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Proficiency in Word, Power Point, Outlook and Excel.
- Experience with Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools a plus.
- Strong understanding of Special Olympics Unified Sports highly recommended.

The position of Unified Champion Schools Manager is a professional, full-time, non-exempt position.
