Position: Camp Shriver Counselor, seasonal (July-August), part-time
Description: Camp Shriver Counselor is responsible for providing high-quality recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants. Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being
This position is non-exempt; some evenings are required.
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead and supervise a group of 8-15 campers in station activities
· Attend pre-camp counselor training
· Provide guidance, direction and exhibit a lead-by-doing approach for volunteers
· Monitor athletes’ health and safety throughout the camp
· Work cooperatively with camp leadership and staff for any challenges that arise
· Be exemplars of inclusion in attitude and engagement with athletes and volunteers at all time during camp
· Responsibly utilize a walkie talkie for contact among staff and other senior counselors
· Point-of-contact to share with volunteers their responsibilities each day
· Attend the daily counselor leadership meeting prior to camp
· Track and manage athlete progress sheets and complete post-week volunteer evaluations
· Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
· Upcoming Senior or GED required
· Sports experience as an athlete and/or coach preferred
· Special Olympics experience strongly preferred
· Interest in getting to know/engaging with individuals with intellectual disabilities
· Self-starter and must be able to initiate conversation in social settings
· Open-minded, teachable and able to receive constructive feedback
· Ability to enforce camp rules while supervising a diverse group
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to see and hear clearly
- Must be able to communicate fluently and clearly in English (oral)
- Must be able to move comfortably throughout the office and on a variety of outdoor surfaces
- Must be able lift/move up to 50 lbs
