Position Summary :
Special Olympics International (SOI) is an NGO providing sports training and competition to more than 5 million people with intellectual and development disabilities (IDD) in over 170 countries. With over one million coaches and volunteers, Special Olympics delivers 33 Olympic-type sports and more than 108,000 games and competitions throughout the year.
Best known for its engagement around sports, SOI promotes a myriad of health services and activities and houses the largest global database of health screenings of people with IDD. SOI's Health strategy is directed towards promoting equity and reducing health disparities for the 5 million athletes and 80 million people with IDD around the world through four strategic activities :
- Preventive care services, including early intervention for those under 8 years of age, fitness programs and public health promotion activities.
- Assessment services, directed at preventive health screenings and early detection of the most common conditions for people with IDD, and developing person centered care coordination and connections to reduce those conditions.
- Training services, to engage the health care workforce using evidence-based learning activities that employ virtual and hands-on interactions to improve quality of care.
- Promoting health systems reform through partnerships with providers and government organizations and promoting strong self-advocacy.
