What are the responsibilities and job description for the AI Engineer position at Special Projects Engineering LLC?
At Special Projects Engineering LLC, we don't just think outside the box—we redesign the box, patent it, and teach robots to build it. We're a small but mighty Seattle-based skunkworks team focused on applying advanced AI to ambitious, high-impact problems across industries: autonomous systems, predictive infrastructure, synthetic biology, defense-grade automation, and the occasional moonshot that starts on a napkin.
If it’s never been done before, we probably want to try.
What You’ll DoAs a Senior AI Engineer, you’ll be a critical force in designing, developing, and deploying cutting-edge AI systems that push technical and practical boundaries. You’ll work directly with the CTO and a cross-disciplinary team of engineers, researchers, and mad scientists to prototype, test, and ship solutions to real-world problems (and a few strange ones, too).
Responsibilities:
Architect and implement machine learning models, with a focus on performance, scalability, and experimentation.
Work with unstructured data including images, video, audio, text, and sensor data.
Build intelligent systems for perception, decision-making, prediction, or control — depending on the project.
Rapidly prototype ideas while balancing robustness and research-grade curiosity.
Collaborate closely with hardware, embedded, and product teams.
Help define the future of AI inside Special Projects — including tooling, infrastructure, and capability roadmap.
5 years of experience in AI/ML engineering or applied research.
Proficiency in Python (bonus for C or Rust), and deep experience with ML frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
Strong grasp of data science fundamentals, model training, evaluation, and deployment at scale.
Experience with real-world applications — e.g. computer vision, NLP, RL, time-series, or multimodal models.
Comfortable owning projects end-to-end in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
Bonus: background in robotics, embedded ML, distributed systems, or “weird” sensors.
Competitive salary and generous equity packages
Flexible work hours and remote-friendly flexibility
Full health, dental, and vision coverage
Access to top-tier hardware and GPU infrastructure
Work on insane, fun, important things with people who care
Ready to build the future? Apply now and let’s get weird.
