Summary
The Program Coordinator for the Chaplaincy Program at HOPICS will be responsible for managing the coordination, outreach, and implementation of spiritual care services in collaboration with a network of chaplains serving South Los Angeles (SPA 6) communities. This individual will work closely with faith-based organizations, interim housing sites, and HOPICS staff to support community members, participants, and staff in times of crisis, providing spiritual relief, end-of-life care, and other forms of support.
Essential Functions
  • Recruit and maintain a network of spiritual care counselors from various faith traditions in SPA 6, including South LA, Compton, Paramount, and Lynwood.
  • Coordinate spiritual care counselor rotations and schedules for interim housing sites and community visits.
  • Develop partnerships with local churches and religious organizations to enhance volunteer chaplaincy services.
  • Connect with faith leaders with a diverse range of languages spoken to better support participants whose first language is not English.
  • Provide spiritual support to HOPICS participants, including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and end-of-life support.

  • Oversee the planning and delivery of services, memorials, and reflections tailored to the spiritual needs of diverse populations.
  • Ensure chaplains are trained to navigate the Coordinated Entry System (CES) and assist in connecting participants to housing and other resources.
  • Work with chaplains to provide spiritual care and emotional support to HOPICS staff, particularly those experiencing burnout or secondary trauma.
  • Collaborate on staff wellness programming and other mental health initiatives.
  • Foster relationships with churches and religious institutions to encourage the adoption of HOPICS interim housing sites.
  • Coordinate events and volunteer efforts to support housing sites, including bible studies, holiday celebrations, and community-building activities.
  • Track and document chaplain services, including case notes and visitations, through HMIS or other designated tracking systems.
  • Ensure that all chaplains sign in and sign out at sites and document their visits appropriately.
  • Work closely with the Faith-Based Regional Coordinator to evaluate program effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
Minimum Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in theology or a related field.
  • Experience in program coordination, such as managing and overseeing program operations, collaborating with stakeholders, and monitoring and evaluating program effectiveness, using data to inform improvements.
  • Experience in community outreach, such as organizing and leading events, workshops, or initiatives to engage target populations, providing resources, referrals, and support to address community needs, and conducting outreach efforts to promote program services and increase participation.   
  • 2 years of experience in chaplaincy work, preferably in social services or non-profit settings, with skills such as facilitating interfaith dialogue and collaboration to address community challenges and offering spiritual care and guidance to individuals and groups, particularly those facing hardship.
  • Familiarity with the needs of marginalized communities, including the homeless, LGBTQIA , and people of various faiths and backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage relationships with religious and community organizations.
  • Knowledge of the Coordinated Entry System (CES) is a plus.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Oversee a team of 2 to 3 intern (spiritual care counselors) chaplains.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with community partners, stakeholders, and local organizations to support faith-based programing, collaborate on initiatives, and enhance resources and services available to HOPICS staff and participants.
  • Providing guidance, direction, and support to staff members, fostering a positive work environment, and promoting teamwork and collaboration.
Environmental Conditions (Working Conditions)
  • May be exposed to highly aggressive clients: must communicate with many sources including public paying agencies, courts, and outside community agencies.  Local automobile travel is required. Some evenings and weekends may be required.  Sometimes noisy, loud, and disruptive clients.  
Physical Requirements
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of supplies, equipment, or materials needed for program activities, events, or setup.
  • Standing and Sitting: Extended periods of standing or sitting may be required during program delivery, meetings, or administrative tasks.
  • Interaction: The ability to engage in physical activities and sports with youth participants, as well as to provide hands-on support and assistance when needed.
  • Visual and Auditory Abilities: Clear vision and hearing to monitor youth behavior, ensure safety, and effectively communicate with participants, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Manual Dexterity: Proficiency in using office equipment, computers, and other tools necessary for administrative tasks, record-keeping, and program planning.
  • Stamina: The capacity to maintain energy and focus throughout the day, including during busy periods or special events that may involve extended hours or physical exertion.
  • Accommodation: The willingness and ability to accommodate the diverse needs and abilities of youth participants, including those with physical disabilities or other special requirements.
  • Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting (20 lbs.), and some reaching, bending, stooping, walking, squatting, listening, and typing.
  • A great portion of the day requires sitting, standing, carrying equipment/charts/documents, walking, reading, writing, and communicating or a combination of the above.
Mental Requirements
  • This position will require the individual to be able to handle any/all the following: constant distractions, interruptions, uncontrollable changes in priorities/work schedules: be able to process information, think and conceptualize.
