Job Goal(s): 

The Assistive Technology (AT) Consultant is responsible for county-wide consulting and coaching to assist IEP teams, students, and families in identifying, selecting, and implementing AT into the curricula.  The consultant will provide professional support and technical assistance for the implementation of universal, targeted, or individualized AT to support access to learning in the Least Restrictive Environment for students with disabilities. This position will be critical in advancing and developing user-friendly content, training, and guidance (e.g., AT SETT Considerations) for the advancement of AT within both local districts and Van Buren ISD programs.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education:

Master’s degree in special education or field of study related to special education required  

 

Certification

Possess a valid professional certificate/license in one of the following area(s): Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, or Teacher with a Special Education endorsement. 

 

Work Experience

Minimum of three years' experience in the field required. Experience with consultation and selecting, programming, and implementing AT strategies to support students with complex communication and alternative access needs is preferred.

  • Enthusiasm and flexibility to work collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Expertise and working knowledge of operating systems and accessibility features within Apple iOS and ChromeOS.
  • Ability to provide guidance and ongoing support to Individualized Education Programs (IEP) teams on the implementation of the AT decision-making framework to support students’ educational goals and progress in the school curriculum.
  • Ability to support IEP teams in the ongoing use of data to monitor the use of student performance and assistive technology tool effectiveness.
  • Ability to serve as a liaison to the local school district instructional technology department/personnel, collaborating to support and implement assistive technology tools, devices, and materials at the ISD level.
  • Ability to develops, present, and facilitate effective professional learning for a variety of audiences
  • Ability to collaborate with regional and statewide assistive technology committees.
  • Ability to advise school district personnel on consideration and inclusion of assistive technology (AT) on students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Ability to train and support students, parents, and school personnel in general operation of assistive technology tools and workflows using non-technical language.
  • Ability to provide ongoing technical assistance regarding student assistive technology implementation plans.
  • Ability to collaboratively design and implement assistive technology assessment procedures and device protocols within Van Buren County
  • Ability to identify, locate, and utilize AT resources and information from a variety of local, state and national level sources.
  • Working knowledge of best practice and current educational and legal issues related to consideration of AT within the educational environment.
  • Able to show evidence of professional growth, including leadership and participation in a wide range of significant professional development activities. 
  • Possess strong knowledge of high-leverage practices and differentiated instruction. 
  • Ability to accept feedback and direction from the team
  • Ability to collect and use data to make decisions

    • Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and the Superintendent.

 

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to travel across the county to provide service
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time 
  • Ability to travel to other areas across the state to access professional learning and collaboration

 

Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
