School Based Occupational Therapist Job description:

 

A School-Based Occupational Therapist (OT) works within an educational setting, with students ranging from preschool to high school. This is a shared position with one other Occupational Therapist and a COTA. They focus on helping students develop the skills necessary to participate in school activities and succeed academically.

Director of Special Services or School Principal

Job Summary:

The Occupational Therapist provides assessment, therapy, and consultation services to students with physical, sensory, and cognitive challenges that impact their ability to participate in school and daily activities. They develop intervention strategies to enhance students’ functional independence and academic success within the school environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments of students referred for occupational therapy services, identifying strengths and areas of need.
    • Interpret and integrate results from a variety of assessment tools and collaborate with other professionals to develop a complete understanding of the student's needs.
  2. Individualized Education Program (IEP) Development:
    • Participate in IEP meetings, providing input on present levels of performance, goals, and necessary accommodations/modifications.
    • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans tailored to each student's specific educational and developmental goals.
  3. Direct Therapy Services:
    • Provide direct occupational therapy to students individually or in small groups, focusing on fine motor, self-care, and adaptive skills to enhance their ability to engage in educational activities.
    • Adjust interventions to fit the unique needs of each student and measure progress regularly.
  4. Consultation and Collaboration:
    • Work closely with teachers, parents, and other educational staff to develop strategies that support students' occupational performance.
  5. Documentation and Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation of evaluations, therapy sessions, progress notes, and communication with staff and parents.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and standards for special education and related services.
  6. Program Development and Support:
    • Participate in school-based initiatives and programs that promote student wellness, motor skill development, and overall school participation.
    • Contribute to team discussions on enhancing classroom environments, reducing physical barriers, and promoting inclusive practices.
  7. Professional Development:
    • Attend training, workshops, and continuing education activities to stay current with best practices and innovations in pediatric occupational therapy.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure/Certification: Valid state licensure as an Occupational Therapist (OT); 
  • Experience: Prior experience in a pediatric or school setting is preferred.
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent standing, bending, and lifting required for assisting students with mobility and positioning.
  • Ability to travel between school sites.
