POSITION CLASSIFICATION:  Support

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  9 months

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Associates or Bachelors within the field of Communicative Disorders
  2. Valid professional license as an SLPA in the state of Missouri, or the ability to obtain upon hire
  3. Minimum of 100 hours of supervised field work experience or its clinical experience equivalent
  4. Solid understanding of speech and language development
  5. Knowledge of learning problems of students with special education needs
  6. Knowledge of student behavior management techniques and strategies
  7. Excellent written and oral communication skills

JOB SUMMARY

The position of Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) was established for the purpose(s) of conducting various tasks/treatment interventions to assist students with speech and language disorders, under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The duties of the Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide direct speech and language therapy to students and follows documented treatment plans or protocols
  • Learn and utilize current speech-language methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional setting
  • Document and maintain student performance records
  • Assist the licensed SLP with speech, language and hearing screenings
  • Provide instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices
  • Prepare therapy materials and/or equipment
  • Perform checks and maintenance of equipment for therapeutic purposes
  • Work independently
  • Adapts or modifies instructional materials and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities for teacher
  • Assists instructional personnel in the implementation if Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Supports the SLP in research projects and in-service trainings
  • Exhibits compliance with state and federal regulations
  • May work in a variety of locations, including school or District offices
  • Participates in District in-service training as required
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions, including intervention plans
  • Exercise independent judgment and problem-solving skills related to specific areas of responsibility
  • Work successfully with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to be flexible and receptive to change
  • Display the ability to work to implement the vision and mission of the District
  • Conference with parents and school staff on a regular basis
  • Models positive behavior for students (i.e. inter-personal communication, processes, social interactions, etc.) for the purpose of providing educational and life skills training
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, dress and appropriate professional manner for the work setting
  • Demonstrate effective human relations and communication skills
  • Adhere to good safety practices
  • Ability to understand and adhere to all District rules, regulations and policies
  • All other duties as required or assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • stand, walk, sit and talk/hear;
  • occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl;
  • occasionally push, pull or lift up to 50 lbs; and
  • be able to see, including close, distance and depth perception.
