JOB SUMMARY
Specialized Fabrication Equipment Group, Inc. (SFE) is a highly-engineered product company developing standard and custom machining, welding and valve testing equipment for the global markets. Primary sectors include shipbuilding, power generation, semi-conductor, oil & gas, heavy construction, mining and valve testing.
The Senior Director of Engineering leads a global design, sustaining and support team headquartered in Newberg, Oregon (an ISO-certified facility), but with representation at other domestic and international sites. The focus of the role is to establish a vision and supporting strategies that provide SFE with a clear competitive advantage in terms of product effectiveness and quality. Incorporation of new technologies is also important to the role. This position reports to the CEO and is based in Newberg.
SFE designs both standard and custom products that include but are not limited to the following systems: mechanical (gearboxes, structural members, dynamic members), AC/DC electrical control (VFD, Servo, Stepper, PLC, Back EMF, Encoder, High Frequency), hydraulic (variable flow, safety interlocks), pneumatic (safety interlock) and data logging (LabView, Embedded System, Raspberry Pie).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Set the company’s strategic direction for the engineering function.
- Provide effective leadership for the global engineering team.
- Oversee engineering practices, systems, and designs to ensure compliance with organizational policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop an engineering roadmap that supports the organization’s commercial objectives.
- Manage and rationalize product portfolio/ product lifecycles.
- Plan and manage global departmental budget.
- Define product requirements.
- Review customer POs/Contracts.
- Manage cross-functional product development teams.
- Work with ERP/IT support teams to optimize ERP support of the engineering function.
- Manage offshore (India) engineering team.
- Other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of eight years of engineering leadership; demonstrated success in leading teams
- 10 or more years of hands-on design engineering
- Stage gate product development process experience
- Managing product lifecycles and rationalization
- Bachelor of Engineering degree
- MBA or advanced engineering degree preferred
- Onsite presence is required for this position
- Some travel required, domestic and international
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Controls engineering for electromechanical products (AC/DC controls).
- Background in machining, Mig welding, Tig welding
- Gearbox/gear design and manufacturing
- Hydraulic system design and manufacturing
- Servo control design
- Pneumatic system design
- Variable Frequency Drive system design, greater than 1 HP
- Regulatory compliance for CE (European), UKCA, CRN and SABER
- ITAR compliance
- CAD/Vault management tools preferred (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Mastercam)
- Lean Manufacturing Tools
- Design for Manufacturing/Design for Assembly
- Quality system tools – NCMR and CAPA
- Design for Lean Manufacturing
