Lead Drinking Water and Environmental Chemistry Analyst

This is a full-time hourly position working 40 hours per week. Position salary starts at $20-$25 per hour within core operations Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Hours may be adjusted to meet workload needs.

This position provides lead supervisory and support for both General Chemistry, Heavy Metals, and Mercury analytical activities. This position works with the other laboratory staff and limited interaction with the general public. The lead analyst must have a positive and professional attitude with well-developed communication, customer service, statistical, analytical, computer, and multitasking skills.

Other duties may be assigned.

Position Responsibilities:

  • This position is responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of analytical results from the specific analysis that are assigned by the Laboratory Manager.
  • This position is also responsible for preparing and maintaining adequate stocks of reagents for the tests assigned.
  • This position is responsible for keeping accurate and complete records as detailed in the laboratory policy and procedures manual.
  • This position is responsible for client record archiving and laboratory data archiving.
  • This position is responsible for maintaining all instrumentation and equipment assigned to them.

Duties and Tasks:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

1) Prepare reagents, standards, and QC samples to support sample analysis;

2) Use appropriate SM and/or EPA methods to analyze water, soil, or other sample matrices for inorganic chemical constituents as assigned;

3) Training chemical analysts and technicians, as needed;

4) Use Ion Chromatography instrumentation to analyze samples for inorganic anions;

5) Use Discreet Analyzer instrumentation to analyze samples for inorganic analytes, anions, nutrients, minerals, and/or metals;

6) Use Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) instrumentation to analyze samples for heavy metal analytes;

7) Use Flow Injection Mercury System (FIMS) instrument to analyze mercury analyte;

8) Use routine laboratory equipment such as: pH meter, Ion Selective Electrode, Alkalinity-Titration meter, and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer to analyze pH, color, alkalinity, cyanide, temperature, and other analytes;

9) Use Dissolved Oxygen (DO) meter, combination meter, for BOD, CBOD, Temperature, and DO analysis;

10) Use conductivity meter to determine electrical conductivity and salinity;

11) Use computer programs (e.g., LIMS) to calculate and report analytical data;

12) Accurately review Quality Control (QC) and sample result data;

13) Accurately report data from analysis in a timely manner;

14) Record and review inventory of supplies routinely used and make requests for supplies in sufficient time to prevent uninterrupted routine analysis;

15) Handling and maintaining an inventory of all Hazardous Waste generated and recording of laboratory waste disposal via multiple streams;

16) Writing and updating laboratory SOP’s as assigned;

17) Perform and maintain analytical and instrument Method Detection Limits (MDLs), Instrument Detection Limits (IDLs), and Control Chart Limits;

18) Perform general housekeeping duties of assigned bench-top areas (e.g., clean bench-tops, wipe up spills, dusting instruments, computer equipment and other equipment);

19) Sample digestion, extraction, and/or filtration as required to perform analysis (e.g., Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), Total Phosphorus (TP), anions, and other analytes for drinking water, environmental, and solid (soil) matrices);

20) Other duties may be assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s of Science (BS) degree with a major in natural sciences such as Chemistry or Biochemistry with a minimum of one (1) year experience as a laboratory analyst, or an Associate’s Degree plus three (3) years’ experience as a laboratory technician or analyst performing general inorganic chemical, heavy metal and mercury, and/or organic analysis in a high production labboratory environment.

Assigned Test Parameters:

Acidity, Alkalinity, Ammonia, Ammonium, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Carbonate/Bicarbonate, Carbonaceous Biochemical Oxygen Demand (CBOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Chloride, Conductivity, Color, Cyanide (WS (drinking water) only), Dissolved Oxygen, Ferrous Iron, Fluoride, Heavy Metals, Mercury, Nitrate-Nitrogen, Nitrite-Nitrogen, Nitrate plus Nitrite-Nitrogen, Ortho-Phosphorus-P, pH, Residual Chlorine (Total and Free), Sulfate, Sulfite, Sulfide, Soluble-Reactive Phosphorus (SRP), Tannin, Temperature, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Solids (TS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Volatile Solids (TVS), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), Turbidity.

Working Conditions:

There is possible exposure to hazardous chemicals on a daily basis. Exposure to groundwater, drinking water, wastewater, and environmental samples.

Physical Demands:

Frequent standing, kneeling, and/or sitting. Frequent hand manipulation of tools and equipment. May have to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 lbs. May be exposed to wastewater aromas.

Organizational Relationships:

Laboratory Manager: This position reports directly to the Laboratory Manager.

Analyst: This position acts as the lead chemical analyst and oversees chemistry analysts in the Chemistry unit, and as such, oversees the activities of other staff as laboratory technicians and lab helpers working in the general chemistry unit.

Other: This position has limited interaction with clients in person and by phone, answering questions related to test results and parameter methods.
