The Construction Management (CM) Division team at Los Alamos National Laboratory invites candidates to apply for a Project Manager 2 / Superintendent 3 position. This role will lead projects while supporting the Lab's mission. The Project Manager 2 / Superintendent 3 will be responsible for projects ≥ $500K and provide oversight to Superintendent 2s as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Leadership & Management
- Lead projects ≥ $500K and oversee Superintendent 2s as needed.
- May initiate investigations of abnormal events, incidents, and/or accidents to identify root causes and assist in implementing corrective actions.
- May serve as a Control Account Manager (CAM) responsible for planning, budgeting, and controlling costs and schedule performance for a project or subproject.
- Serve as a point of contact for project controls, including account scope, schedule, budget, and technical performance.
- Ensure work packages realistically reflect necessary duration and budget.
- Perform variance analysis reviews, determine causes and effects of schedule or cost variances, and define achievable corrective action plans.
- May be required to present project management performance plans, status updates, trends, or issues to federal sponsors.
- May be required to work a flexible schedule – Days and Graves.
Construction & Risk Management
- Proven leadership and management skills to organize, direct, and control a team of workers, including work schedules, project progress, and resource allocation.
- Advanced experience managing construction projects, including proactively handling project scope, schedule, and budget using Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
- Identify project risks, develop risk mitigation strategies, and recommend risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of a project.
- Advanced knowledge of all phases and complexity levels of construction projects, upgrades, renovations, and D&D.
- Lead constructability reviews during the design process and assess potential impacts on construction cost and schedule.
- Extensive knowledge of facility maintenance and construction management, including:
- Systems engineering design and maintenance
- Safety/authorization basis
- Configuration management programs
- Work control and facility control systems
Labor & Safety Compliance
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining agreements related to all trades.
- Deep understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.
- Ability to interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
Stakeholder Engagement & Problem Solving
- Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective customer engagement.
- Experience interfacing with program, project, and line management to develop clear, executable action plans.
- Provide personal leadership, direction, and technical advice regarding health, safety, and environmental compliance.
- Identify problem areas, investigate alternative solutions, and establish a recovery plan/path forward.
- Ability to determine actions needed to address problems affecting maintenance programs.
Communication & Reporting
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including reporting on project status to senior management, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
- Skilled in preparing and presenting oral and written reports.
- Ability to utilize and manipulate a computerized work management system for job tracking, including coordinating material and equipment deliveries with vendors and suppliers.
- Ability to promote an open communication environment to foster mutual trust and teamwork.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- A recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline OR specialized courses in project management.
- 10 years of relevant work experience, including 5 years in at least one of the following functions:
- Engineering
- Procurement
- Construction
Required Skills & Certifications
- Active DOE Q Clearance required.
- Nuclear Experience required.
