Job Description
Our client is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer with a strong background in VMWare to join our team, who will leverage their understanding of virtualization, storage, networking, encryption, and security to become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the hosted virtual environment. Candidate will be a technical SME of the environment, including but not limited to the following activities: building, designing, deploying, configuring and troubleshooting a robust Virtualized Infrastructure. Will work hybrid on-site and remote and provide support to OT Engineering and remote manufacturing facilities with troubleshooting and resolving virtualization issues.
This role is critical for driving the major hardware and data center refresh initiatives. The team is undergoing a $10M infrastructure investment and needs a strong Systems Engineer to lead VMware and server deployments, system automation, and architecture upgrades across multiple sites.
Current Landscape:
- Data center refresh is the focus: new gear being acquired, large-scale upgrades being implemented
- Role involves physical implementation and system configuration at core and remote data centers
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead the VMware and server build-outs as part of major infrastructure upgrade
- Collaborate with IT and operations on deployment planning and physical installation
- Configure new hardware and assist in migrating from legacy systems like Hyper-V
- Participate in ongoing support and enhancement of core systems
- Occasional travel to support refreshes at remote data centers
Technical Must-Haves:
- VMware expertise (5–7 years minimum) – high tier
- Experience building VMs and automation
- Configuring systems, migrating from Hyper-V
- Strong understanding of Windows Server and Active Directory
- Hands-on experience with large data center deployments and hardware installations
- VMware vSphere 8.0:
- Install, configure and administer VMware ESXi 8.0
- Install, configure and administer VMware vCenter 8.0
- Create and configure vSphere virtual switches (standard and distributed)
- Understand VLAN trunking to virtual switches
- Administer vSphere Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) datastores
- Build VMware virtual machine templates
- Clone VMware virtual machines from template
- Administer vSphere Lifecycle Manager
- Experience with vSAN
- PowerShell and PowerCLI scripting
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required
