GENERAL SUMMARY :
Under general supervision of the Medical Director or designee, assists in gross dissection and description of surgical specimens and provides other support duties related to Anatomic Pathology.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
1. Assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical tissue examinations. Completes dissection and gross description of selected surgical cases daily, including inking and tumor staging. Selects and submits appropriate sections for routine microscopic examination. Selects and submits appropriate sections for frozen section, routine or special fixatives including imprints for light, electron or fluorescence microscopy.
2. Prepares photographic record of lesions or specimens for documentation, conferences and / or publications as directed by the pathologist.
3. Establishes and updates surgical pathology grossing manual as required by CAP and other regulatory agencies.
4. Depending on campus location may :
- Assist in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem examinations. Initiates and verifies that appropriate authorization is obtained for post-mortem examinations. Collects the following specimens 100% of the time :
o Routine sections of major organs and tissues for retention
o Appropriate tissue sampling for microscopic evaluation
o Appropriate samples for toxicology, microbiology and / or cytogenetic studies as needed.
